As I surround myself with fellow gardening enthusiasts at home, my sense of connection deepens when I’m immersed in the great outdoors. For me, meals often serve as a powerful way to stay connected to my cultural heritage and sense of identity rooted in tradition. As I reminisce about my grandmother’s homemade gumbo, a dish so deeply rooted in her DIY spirit, I’ve never had the courage to attempt another variation – it’s a family treasure that can’t be replicated. Meanwhile, for Sienna and other Indigenous peoples, days like IDWIP serve as poignant reminders that they still exist, their cultures thriving and deserving of recognition.
