WhatsApp has been piloting a feature to send reminders for unread group chats since September, and it’s now available for Android users participating in the messaging app’s beta programme.
This new reminder feature is now available on WhatsApp for Android, starting with beta version 2.24.25.29, which includes the added functionality to send you notifications for unread messages. The toggle button to enable or disable display of this information is located below Settings > Notifications > Reminders menu. When enabled, WhatsApp sends you timely reminders about unread messages and missed updates.
WABetaInfo Studies show that notifications for chosen contacts are determined by an internal algorithm that prioritizes those with whom users interact most frequently. Moreover, this algorithm only applies to the current instance of WhatsApp, meaning that if a user reinstalls the app, WhatsApp must recalculate these interactions, as this data is not stored in backups or on the server.
Wouldn’t a WhatsApp feature allowing users to opt-in for notification reminders on specific contacts they’ve curated be incredibly useful? WhatsApp might roll out this feature to users through its usual update mechanism, potentially replacing an existing feature before making it available to everyone.
For Android users who prefer to stay ahead of the curve, there’s an option to join the beta program and start experiencing this feature early on.
