When your home burns down prematurely before a family assembly takes place.

As you’re preparing to depart for the meeting with the industry leader, disaster strikes when flames erupt throughout your home, plunging you into chaos and uncertainty.

As I worked from home one afternoon, I had just finished a lengthy phone call. I had no inkling that my existence was on the cusp of a profound transformation. As I settled in to enjoy the meal I had prepared, a sudden and jarring explosion shook the air mere moments before my scheduled meeting was set to begin. I inspected the outdoor air conditioning unit in our yard and found it functioning properly. As I approached my front door, I was drawn in by the unmistakable sight of thick black smoke billowing from the side of my house.

Cream-colored two-story house with black shutters. The left side siding is removed and wood is exposed from fire damage. As the inferno engulfed our neighborhood, I catapulted into high gear, simultaneously battling to evacuate my daughters, mother, and myself from the home, while also placing a frantic 911 call and swiftly relocating my truck from the driveway, despite the asphalt already warping under the intense heat. As the Hearth Division arrived, chaos engulfed us, allowing me to observe every detail unfold in stunned silence, like watching a film play out before my eyes.

As flames engulfed our possessions, I found myself torn apart by a maelstrom of emotions. As I embarked on the arduous task of rebuilding, I found unexpected comfort in the unshakeable support of my supervisor and colleagues at Cisco.

As the second piece of information reached our ears, my supervisor and colleagues sprang to my defense. Their empathetic nature was almost tangible, and their extraordinary dedication to assisting me and my family went far beyond the call of duty, leaving a lasting impression on me. Rather than offering empty words of condolence, they took concrete action. My supervisor ensured that we would have at least one satisfying meal the following day. My team members assumed responsibility for managing my accounts. They extended their private networks to facilitate our discovery of short-term housing and essential resources. This exceptional care transcended professional boundaries, cultivating a profound connection founded on trust and empathy.

This expertise emphasizes the crucial difference between being led by a supervisor and being driven by a frontrunner. While a supervisor ensures tasks are completed, a true leader takes a personal interest in your growth and development. For many, life unfolds in a way that transcends mere professional guidance; they crave more – genuine understanding, compassion, and support – precisely the kind of connection I formed with my leader. With unwavering support, they provided the space and time I needed to focus on my family’s well-being, consistently paying regular visits – usually twice a week – without expecting a prompt response. Additionally, they ensured that I received a critical block of paid time off, distinct from regular paid breaks, which proved vital for my recovery.

At Cisco, my team embodied a camaraderie that transcended mere colleagues. By separating my financial accounts, they ensured seamless issue resolution, kept me informed about workplace updates, and provided valuable financial assistance. They offered sustenance, financial assistance, and expert advice on navigating insurance claims. Their prompt pickup allowed me to enjoy a month-long sabbatical, returning to work without any hiccups.

The exceptional support I received was undoubtedly a key factor in my decision to rejoin Cisco. I’ve held various positions within the company, taking time off for maternity leave before recently transitioning into sales, driven by my passion for building connections and sharing stories. While every function has played a role in my personal growth, it is indeed the collective contributions of individuals and the heritage they represent that truly stand out as making all the difference.

The memories of that pivotal conversation remain etched in my recollection. With a radiant blue Afro cascading down my shoulders and purple rings adorning my nostrils, I strode confidently into the room, unashamedly true to myself. I resisted changing my appearance, and Cisco accepted me unconditionally for who I am. Among us, there’s a profound appreciation for the unwavering authenticity that permeates our community – an unshakeable sense of acceptance and support that envelops us in its warmth.

What implications does being a frontrunner in the workplace convey about one’s role within an organization, particularly in relation to their fellow employees? Having people by your side through life’s triumphs and tribulations, supporting you both intellectually and emotionally. Being part of an organization that celebrates diversity and fosters a culture where individuals feel empowered to bring their authentic selves to the workplace. The timely and effective assistance I received from Cisco when I needed it the most solidified my appreciation for the company’s culture of support, ultimately reinforcing why I love being part of this team.

As we embark on this journey together, let’s celebrate the unique paths we’ve traversed and stand strong in unity, supporting each other through life’s triumphs and tribulations. Keep robust and keep linked.

Creating an environment where everyone can flourish is essential.
