In April 2022, the initiative to develop a bot farm began, with individuals acquiring online infrastructure while maintaining anonymity regarding their identities and locations. According to the Department of Justice, the objective of the group was to further Russian interests by disseminating misinformation through the use of fictional online identities portraying various nationalities.
Two fake social media accounts were created using private email servers dependent on the domains mlrtr[.]com and otanmail[.]com, which had been acquired from Namecheap, a domain registrar. Since then, X has suspended the bot accounts that violated its terms of service.
A covert intelligence operation, codenamed Meliorator, successfully leveraged artificial intelligence to orchestrate a massive social media bot network across seven countries: the United States, Poland, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain, Ukraine, and Israel.

While initial assessments pinpointed the malware’s presence on X, subsequent investigations have uncovered a more sinister goal: to expand its capabilities and infiltrate other prominent social media platforms.
As a result, the system exploited vulnerabilities in X’s authentication protocols by automatically forwarding one-time verification codes sent to registered email addresses to AI-generated accounts, while simultaneously allocating proxy Internet Protocol (IP) addresses tied to fabricated locations for these artificial personas.
Companies noted that bot personas make attempts to evade service violations and avoid detection as bots by blending in with the larger social media environment, apparently. These artificial personas mimic the characteristics of authentic profiles, mirroring the political inclinations and interests outlined in their bio.
