Within a span of less than two months ago. Since 2022, Kairos Energy, a renowned recipient of industry accolades, has issued three significant updates detailing the company’s advancements in developing pioneering nuclear reactors.
Each of these individual anecdotes offers a captivating glimpse into the process. Let’s scrutinize the bulletins and their implications for the nuclear expertise landscape.
Here’s a fresh look at nuclear energy with Kairos: Unlike traditional reactors that rely heavily on pressurized water for cooling, Kairos is pioneering the use of molten salt to achieve a safer and more efficient nuclear operation. These compact reactors will facilitate the production of electricity in a safer and more environmentally friendly way compared to traditional nuclear power.
As a pioneering effort in agronomy, Kairos is incrementally advancing towards its aspirational goal of cultivating large-scale energy crops. Construction commenced a year ago on Hermes, the company’s inaugural nuclear power reactor trial. The innovative facility will produce a modest yet significant amount of heat, equivalent to approximately 35 megawatts, effectively showcasing its exceptional capabilities.
This plant will coexist with Hermes, housing the necessary infrastructure to convert thermal energy into electricity. That marks a milestone, as it becomes the first-of-its-kind, next-generation nuclear facility in the United States to secure this crucial approval for commercial operation?
While it was not unexpected news, given the corporation’s long-standing collaboration with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, “every day that involves obtaining a permit or licence from the NRC is a rare and momentous occurrence,” said Kairos CEO Mike Laufer in our conversation.
The corporation is developing a strategy to construct both Hermès and Hermès 2 concurrently, according to him. If Hermes continues to be under observation, when might it launch in 2027? According to our previous report in October, Laufer indicated that’s an “ambitious schedule.”
Kairos will establish a robust foundation beneath which it will cultivate, integrate, and optimize crop production while simultaneously generating clean electricity for the technology giant.
