Sony’s initial foray into the gaming industry. The PlayStation, an impressive upgrade of the original Nintendo console, featured a CD-ROM drive that enabled games to incorporate additional multimedia elements via Sony’s proprietary Super Disc format.
The collaboration imploded when Nintendo announced its partnership with Philips in 1991, and it was widely believed that all 200 prototypes of the Nintendo PlayStation had been lost forever – until at least one resurfaced in 2015, courtesy of the founder of Pets.com and Toys.com.
The provenance behind this second Nintendo PlayStation public sale remains undisclosed, yet describes the prototype controller as sporting a familiar Super Nintendo casing branded with ‘Sony PlayStation’ in dark grey on the front, bearing “a few little dings” on the rear. Despite being in “very good condition,” Heritage Auctions cannot verify its functionality due to the extreme scarcity of the console it’s designed for. Due to these circumstances, refunds will not be possible for the successful bidder.
Will this rare prototype fetch a handsome price at auction? In 2020, a sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. sold for $2 million, and just over a year later, another copy of the same game achieved an equally impressive valuation. Although shelling out that much money on a game you never plan to play seems a bargain compared to owning. That was purchased in 2021 for around $0.25?
The demand for vintage collectibles remains unabated, and although this controller couldn’t command the same price tag as the Nintendo PlayStation console, its scarcity ensures that it will never be replicated again?
According to Heritage Auctions, bidding on this prototype will commence on August 2nd and close on August 24th, as we await the discovery of what a potentially unusable controller is worth to a lucky bidder?
