What’s beneath the surface? The Oracle’s Scroll is a thought-provoking, combat-free metroidvania for the Playdate that will test your wits and curiosity.

As I delve into the realm of architecture, I’m consistently struck by the incredible feats that builders have achieved in their creations. As I initially pre-ordered the handheld without fully anticipating its potential options, I must admit my expectations didn’t extend beyond the crank-centered games Panic showcased before its release, seemingly designed for short gaming sessions. Over the past few months, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed performing numerous tasks, but I’ve also devoted countless hours to solving complex puzzles and navigating elaborate digital landscapes in immersive video games, revealing an astonishing depth of content. Which recently arrived at the Playdate Catalog could also be the most impactful addition, but?

Developed by bumbleborn, this metroidvania game may initially intimidate those who shy away from combat, but fear not: it’s a non-violent experience that focuses on challenging platforming, puzzles, and exploration as you navigate vast underground environments to find your way. Does the sprawling map of this Playdate game feel overwhelming at first, boasting an astonishing 250+ rooms spread across four levels according to the developer?

As a mysterious and devastating illness, known as the Great Blight, ravaged the land, the people of three kingdoms were left with no choice but to seek refuge beneath the earth’s surface. Citizens inhabit the lowest tier of the realm known as Bottomrock. Because the infant protagonist of the sports world, you’re embarking on a treacherous quest to deliver a precious scroll to The Archives, which demands that you traverse the notoriously hazardous Kingdoms Three. In this enigmatic realm, diverse secrets and techniques are concealed, requiring collaboration with specific atmospheric elements in unanticipated ways to progress or access seemingly elusive objects.

With an undercurrent of haunting serenity, the experience navigates both challenging and tranquil aspects. The music venue provides a fitting atmosphere, and aesthetically, it’s stunning. The artwork’s precision extends to its smallest details, leaving me enamored with every aspect of its meticulous design. Enlarged characters, reminiscent of the whimsical frog prince whose plump belly invites playful pokes, miraculously spring into existence. The harmonious fusion of music, visual artistry, narrative depth, and atmospheric essence simultaneously captivated my attention. If there’s one Playdate game you absolutely must pick up right away, it’s this.
