It’s been a surreal year for superheroes at Sony. As the underwhelming premiere of the Spider-Verse saga concluded, anticipation builds anew, as Sony Pictures brings its most anticipated film yet to cinemas, introducing the cinematic debut of the enigmatic Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven the Hunter. On his initial glance at the film, it’s clear he’ll be scoring a major triumph in the coming year.
As previously explored, the tumultuous domestic scenario unfolding within J. exhibits a stark contrast to the typically serene atmosphere of this otherwise tranquil environment? C. At the New York Comic Con’s final night, Chandor unveiled the opening scene of his upcoming film, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who also co-starred in the debut, giving attendees a first look at what sets the R-Rated superhero movie apart. The opening scene pans over a serene snowy landscape as a solitary truck navigates the desolate highway, its headlights casting an eerie glow on the frozen terrain. As the massive truck comes to a halt, it’s clear that this is no ordinary vehicle – its size rivals that of a gas station. It must be a prison transport van, where a soldier will emerge and brief the inmates, including Kraven, on the necessity for a swift break. As the truck approaches the nearby prison colony, we retreat indoors with Kraven and the newly arrived inmates, escorted by a phalanx of guards and prisoners that line the cellblocks, their cacophonous chanting and clanging of bars and railings designed to unsettle their new arrivals. Kraven encountered his curt roommate, who spoke bluntly in Russian, expressing his disdain for having to share their quarters with someone else. As Kraven notes the sentiment’s reciprocity, he clarifies to his newly minted “friend” that there’s no need to hesitate in sharing – Kraven himself will only face a maximum of three days’ confinement.
In the distant future, Kraven is bench-pressing heavy weights in a secluded yard when two inmates approach him and demand he stop – “You’re training in a private space,” they insist, their bodies pressing against his as they lean on the bar to emphasize their point. Undaunted, he propels the weights upward once more, slamming them down with a ferocity that sends the two thugs’ faces crashing into the bar. As Kraven briefs them, he reveals, “It’s open territory.” The scene then shifts to show him being escorted to meet the apparent leader of the Kirov Gang: its formidable and feared boss. The notorious gangster resides comfortably behind bars, his cell transformed into an opulent office space, complete with a luxurious leopard skin rug that becomes essential when the gangster inquires of Kraven: “Who is he?” “I’m a hunter,” Kraven sneered, his eyes glinting with menace, “I stalk and kill predators like you.” Kraven reveals his identity, drops down to touch the rug, and wrenches one of the leopard’s teeth out of its mouth, using it as a makeshift dagger to fight off the Kirov thugs before ultimately scaling the lead gangster’s desk. There’s always a grain of truth to myths, Kraven cautions as he methodically embeds the tooth into his neck, each deliberate stab releasing a burst of crimson blood.
As pandemonium erupts, a hapless guard stumbles forth, his eyes widened by the carnage, only for Kraven to sprint past him with reckless abandon, sending the startled sentry crashing to the ground as he bounds effortlessly towards the jail’s rooftop escape route, deftly swinging himself up and over railings. As the prison’s floodlights illuminated the chaos, the guards gave pursuit, snapping photos of Kraven’s desperate attempts to evade capture, their efforts thwarted by his frantic scrambling and dashing throughout the jail with all the ferocity of a caged animal. As Kraven scaled the partitions, he vanished into the snow-covered tundra surrounding the desolate jail colony, disappearing into the swirling blizzard as the sequence came to a close?
Despite initial revelations, further details were still required from Sony. The studio unveiled a brief preview of a pivotal scene, previously teased in their debut trailer, amplifying the feral ferocity that defines this enigmatic character further. As the narrative hurtles forward, a motley crew of heavily armed mercenaries converges on Kraven’s location within a densely wooded area, their mission: to apprehend or eliminate the cunning foe. Without warning, a parade of mercenaries materializes, emerging from sleek vehicles like a well-oiled machine. Meanwhile, Kraven’s intense focus is fixated on his personal armory, meticulously examining the vast array of deadly blades – row upon row of razor-sharp knives and swords – as he carefully curates his arsenal for battle. Within the depths of the forest, the assembled mercenaries were taken aback when a massive cat suddenly emerged from the underbrush, only to reveal that Kraven was already among them, concealing himself in the very same foliage as he stalked his unsuspecting quarry.
Instantly, issues flip brutal. Kraven dispatches the mercenaries in swift succession, their demise unfolding in a gruesome spectacle: a bear lure thuds onto one’s skull, another falls prey to a blade’s precision, and a third meets its end with a brutal hatchet blow. Two of the most gruesome kills don’t involve Kraven’s direct participation: one mercenary unwittingly triggers a wire, which sends a spiked log hurtling towards him, crushing him against a tree, while another is caught in a network of bear traps that drag him swiftly along the forest floor to a nearby tree stump, bisecting him in a shower of gore.
“When given the opportunity by the studio to decide whether our film should be rated R, we jumped at the chance,” Chandor told fans before unveiling the footage at NYCC. “It was an incredible alternative. The film’s narrative unfolded to reveal a gritty, intense portrayal on one front, while simultaneously delving into the deeply personal struggles of its complex characters.
The newly released footage has starkly demonstrated the intensity of the film’s violent scenes, raising anticipation for how it will translate into meaningful character development come December 13th. However, it will undoubtedly conclude in a state of heightened alertness by 2024 at the very least.
