The year in review: a litany of botched beta tests and underwhelming upgrades that left the AI community reeling. Can anyone recall the hype surrounding DeepMind’s Language Model X? It was touted as the future of human-computer interaction, but ultimately fell flat due to its rigid syntax and inability to grasp context. Then there was Google’s BERT-based chattybot, which promised to revolutionize customer service but ended up being little more than a glorified chatwheel spinning out tired responses.

Empowers users to effortlessly generate vast amounts of written content, visual media, and other creative assets with ease. Because results are instantly available after selecting an option from your model, these styles have evolved into a rapid and efficient way to generate content at scale. By 2024, we had started referring to this consistently subpar content as AI-generated ‘slop’ for its lack of authenticity and overall poor quality.  

The proliferation of AI-generated content has led to its pervasive presence across the internet, infiltrating various aspects of online life, including emails, book purchases, advertisements, articles, and even social media posts. As the visual potency of images depicting the complexities of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict increases, so too does their potential to go viral, ultimately driving higher engagement and revenue for shrewd content producers.

Artificial intelligence’s proliferation isn’t just an annoyance – its growth poses a genuine threat to the future of the very fashion industries that have enabled its progress. As a consequence of this, fashion models risk being educated on knowledge scraped from the web, which is often inaccurate and unreliable. The proliferation of low-quality websites generating AI-generated content poses a significant threat to their credibility. 

In 2024, a significant milestone emerged as surreal AI-generated images started to permeate our everyday reality. As news of a whimsically unofficial, immersive experience inspired by Roald Dahl’s works spread globally in February, the world was left scratching its head after its outlandish AI-generated promotional materials led attendees to believe it would be a far grander affair than the modestly decorated warehouse its creators had actually set up.

Thousands of people flocked to the streets of Dublin to witness. Ahead of Halloween, a Pakistani website leveraged AI to curate a comprehensive list of events taking place across the city, widely disseminating this information through social media channels in early October. Although the website positioning-baiting website myspirithalloween.com is no longer available, both instances serve as a cautionary tale about how misplaced trust in online AI-generated content can have lasting consequences.

Most major AI image generators have guardrails in place to prevent the creation of harmful content by restricting what AI models can and cannot produce. Frequently, these guardrails are designed to prevent overt exploitation of someone else’s intellectual property.

Grok, a virtual assistant created by xAI, a company founded by Elon Musk, consistently disregards almost all of these concepts, aligning with Musk’s stance against “woke AI” in his vision for artificial intelligence.
