If you’re a fan of Star Trek episodes like the iconic one featuring tribbles, you’ll appreciate how Casio has captured the essence of that show in its latest product. The company is now bringing Moflin to Japan, a robot with AI “emotional capabilities” that was first showcased at CES 2021. Moflin, a collaborative project between Vanguard Industries and others, is designed as an emotional support robot with a unique expertise in snuggling. According to its developers, each Moflin has its own distinct personality that can adapt to scenarios and form bonds with individuals over time.
The new model is available in two neutral shades, grey and blonde, at a price point of ¥59,400 ($400) approximately, with a projected release date of November 7th. The phrase is unknown outside of Japan.
Mo’Flinn doesn’t just respond to affectionate advances. As you engage with the companion robot, its advanced AI responds with a soft chirp and a series of gentle gestures, as if acknowledging your presence and awaiting further interaction. These interactions will help shape the character. According to Vanguard founder Masahiko Yamanaka, Moflin’s development is contingent upon how it is managed, with its capabilities to learn and grow playing a significant role in shaping its character. Given the unique features of this virtual pet, it’s successful at connecting via Bluetooth and seamlessly integrating with a companion app. This innovation minimizes the risk of physical damage by confining its digital existence within a virtual nest, preserving the illusion that it’s a real pet. As the device begins to recharge, it enters a dormant state, effectively putting itself into a sleep mode. The fur is detachable for easy washing, which is a convenience when the need arises?
Despite running successful and profitable campaigns for Moilin in 2020, Vanguard didn’t start delivering the robots to their backers until late 2023. Casio has transitioned its focus to overseeing the production and logistics aspects of its business.
