Winter’s perpetual unease.

As I turned 7, Los Angeles public schools transitioned to a The unintended consequences of the revised academic calendar were a truncated summer recess and an extended winter holiday, both of which posed their own set of challenges.

For the next 12 months, my parents decided to enroll me in a winter camp experience that, although similar to summer camp, turned out to be significantly less enjoyable. The torrential downpour transformed the serene swimming pools into a murky green hue. As we reflect on the passage of time, I’m reminded that many memories are fleeting; it’s probable that we spent our days crafting numerous lanyards and engaging in spirited debates.

We embarked on a whale-watching expedition, cleverly combining activities and making the most of our January getaway in Southern California. As we sped away from shore, a torrential tempest suddenly erupted, pummeling our vessel with unrelenting ferocity; the only exception being myself as the remaining campers succumbed to seasickness in a chorus of retching. Unprepared and humiliated, my sodden attire caused my trousers to slip down unnoticed amidst the torrential downpour, exposing me to the jeers of the crowd. We didn’t see any whales.

For teenagers, winter break promises to be an unusual experience: while household visits and holiday celebrations offer moments of joy, it’s also a period when school is closed, the weather is harsh, and options for entertainment are scarce. In many areas, remnants of winter’s past remain – unfortunately, it’s no longer possible to build a snowman from freshly fallen snow. For one arduous winter month, I dragged my older child to the local convenience store at subzero temperatures, desperate to escape our frozen home. Issues can get tough.

I have no formal recommendations for unusual end-of-year dates, but suggest honoring them in any way that feels meaningful to you. As the holiday season arrives at our house, I eagerly await the opportunity to celebrate with my young ones, knowing that soon they’ll be scattering their toys and trinkets throughout the home. As my two-year-old enthusiastically declares “It’s Halloween!”, a sense of excitement and anticipation permeates the air. After being gently corrected, they softly whisper “Halloween is all done”, their tone revealing a hint of disappointment. I understand their sentiment – as much as I adore Christmas, there’s something undeniably charming about Halloween too.

As winter’s grip on the world begins to loosen, it’s essential to acknowledge that even amidst the shortest days of the year, the sun’s trajectory is slowly shifting, gradually bringing forth more light. Sleep whenever possible? Take your young ones outside to marvel at the celestial display in the nighttime sky – this month’s stargazing experience awaits! If they’re moderately quiet, consider taking them.

I’ll be taking a brief hiatus this week, and then I’ll be back in touch with you on the 9th of January. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been dedicating time and effort to learning, submitting questions, and sharing engaging podcast suggestions and heartwarming stories about children nestling into cozy nests of toys. We look forward to seeing you in the upcoming year!

My young child takes great pleasure in a whimsical tale about trees decorated with candies, and a confectionery mystery that, spoiler alert, leaves the answer to that timeless question unanswered.
