What drives a group of intergalactic outlaws in the Star Wars universe?

Video games have achieved significant milestones throughout their extensive history of development and experimentation. Despite numerous genres being mapped onto the galaxy-far, distant landscape, a few have received relatively little attention. Brokers of the Empire: Jedi and Sith; pilots, troopers, and bounty hunters. While the fantasy aspect of eSports has rarely been the primary emphasis—a characteristic making it all the more captivating to explore through—its unique capacity to capture this particular facet has been a very long time in the making.

This week, Ubisoft and Huge Leisure release “Kay Vess”, a space-faring adventure that follows Kay Vess, played by Humberly González, as she pursues her dream of building a name for herself in the galaxy as a cunning smuggler and scoundrel. As a master thief in a prison underworld teeming with corruption, Kay finds herself double-crossed during a daring energy shift. The enigmatic Zerek Besh syndicate, led by the cunning Sliro (Caolan Byrne), places a death warrant on her head, forcing her to orchestrate a high-stakes heist on Sliro’s own assets. Gathering a team and forging a reputation for herself among the underworld elite, Kay sets out to execute the hit that will secure her place in the criminal hierarchy forever.

Is your life too predictable?

The allure of Kay’s narrative has long fascinated gamers, yet few Star Wars titles have successfully captured this essence as seamlessly as this single-player campaign does, bringing the galaxy far, distant to vivid life. With a tone that’s more akin to a television series than a prolonged cinematic experience, the game presents a greatest-hits compilation of a sci-fi crime narrative, seamlessly blending elements from both genres into an engaging and immersive package. As schemes unfold, deception runs rampant, and cunning allurements ensnare, a rich emotional core drives the narrative: Kay’s fervent longing to forge a life where she finds not only liberty but also a sense of belonging among the stars and the individuals who share her orbit.

While Kay embodies certain qualities reminiscent of a charming Han Solo-like figure, she is initially portrayed as a more understated and nuanced protagonist – not yet the iconic character he becomes by the end of the original trilogy or its sequels, but rather someone more like the early Han Solo we meet in “…” Kay’s impulsive nature makes her prone to taking risks without fully thinking through the consequences, often leaving her scrambling to keep up with the chaos she’s created; yet, her sharp instincts and persuasive charm allow her to talk her way out of sticky situations with surprising frequency. While she may not possess the grandeur of a traditional hero, her compassion and kindness are palpable as she weaves a narrative that honors life with a tender, loving perspective. While this gritty game eschews grand-scale conflict, it instead focuses intently on a scrappy group of misfits and morally ambiguous underworld figures, keeping its scope firmly grounded in their rough-around-the-edges world.

While familiar faces from the trailers do appear – Jabba, head of the Hutt Cartel, and Qi’ra, leader of Crimson Dawn – the game mostly excels at introducing a fresh cast of characters in its vast universe. Throughout the cosmos, a motley crew has congregated under Kay’s banner: ND-5 (Jay Rincon), her enforcer; Nix, a loyal animal companion whose bestial vocalizations are courtesy of legendary Dee Bradley Baker; and a diverse array of scoundrels, slicers, rogues, and ruffians drawn together by the shared perception that the galaxy offers boundless opportunities beyond the tumult of the Galactic Civil War.

Spanning approximately 20 hours, the primary narrative remains engaging without overstaying its welcome, despite the rich landscape and diverse content that can easily double or triple the playtime when exploring every nook of its expansive open worlds. While primary missions exhibit a straightforward and linear design compared to open-world content, primarily involving infiltration, data acquisition, or individual retrieval, often with violent or non-violent outcomes – what they sacrifice in approach flexibility is more than compensated by the potency of the overarching narrative. The scoundrel’s narrative allure and deeply flawed protagonists combine to captivate and sustain interest until the very end, leaving viewers eager for more in a richly exploitable setting.

A reliable ally at your side.

Additional features lean into this scrappy underdog characterization seamlessly, effectively reinforcing the narrative’s tone and themes. While General operates within the realm of typical action-adventure open-world third-person shooters, particularly those from Ubisoft and Bethesda, its thematic focus differs significantly from protagonists like Cal Kestis or Kyle Katarn. You’ve obtained a versatile blaster by your side, coupled with various ways to customize it through unlockable talents or crafting upgrades, ensuring a truly tailored experience; meanwhile, the shooter combat proves satisfyingly effective.

While there’s a captivating tension in ‘Kay’, it’s peculiar that her strategy to fight doesn’t seem to transform her into a hardened gunslinger, even after she’s mastered the basics? Foes take just enough pictures, dealing out reasonable pain that, even in confined battles, can make you feel threatened; but, when chaos erupts, their relentless attacks become downright infuriating? Han wouldn’t have relished the clandestine aspects of his smuggling career, yet Kay shines brightest here, delivering a thrilling experience that rewards players for embracing the stealthy gameplay.

While Kay’s arsenal is bolstered by the array of bells and whistles allowing for effective stealth, her ultimate advantage lies in the clever collaboration with her diminutive yet deadly extraterrestrial partner, Nix. The innovative Nix mechanism truly shines in its ability to revolutionize ‘stealth mechanics’, seamlessly integrating with game developers to create immersive and thrilling experiences for players. With the effortless press of a button, Nix enables Kay to collaborate seamlessly with global forces and potential adversaries from a safe distance, all while maintaining a discreet presence in the shadows. With his technical expertise, he can retrieve Kay’s fallen blasters, which boast significantly more firepower than her standard-issue pistol, while also diverting surveillance cameras and security personnel (even pilfering valuables from the latter), unlock secure entry points, and disrupt alarm systems.

In a limited capacity, Nix may still play a crucial role in combat, springing into action to intercept an enemy’s attack and protect Kay, either by leaping at their face on command or providing cover fire from a distance to keep them occupied while she closes in for a takedown or delivers a blast. What distinguishes Nix is its masterful execution of stealth gameplay, setting it apart from similar video games by rendering it a delight to engage with, rather than resorting to guns-blazing action, thus further strengthening the emotional connection between Nix and Kay within the narrative. Like Kay, he’s not an unstoppable force, but his unyielding spirit makes him formidable despite being vulnerable to harm, albeit indirectly alerting guards to his presence. He excels at playing the scrappy underdog on this unforgiving planet, leveraging any trick or advantage to take down overwhelmingly superior foes with sheer determination.

Scum, Villainy…

Star Wars Outlaws Faction Reputation
© Ubisoft

Notwithstanding its core narrative and immediate gameplay mechanics, ‘Prison Underworld’s’ most impressive feature lies in its intricate faction reputation system. Throughout the game Kay will encounter four prison teams she’ll work with: three familiar from lore, including the Pyke Syndicate, the Hutt Cartel, and Crimson Dawn; and one created for the game, the insectoid Ashiga Clan, inspired by the planet Kijimi. As Kay traverses the galaxy, she undertakes missions that impact the stability of energy within the underworld, cultivating alliances at the expense of relationships, thereby introducing an unpredictable element into every interaction.

The vast majority of playable content stems from the variety of missions and contracts offered by each of the four syndicates. While most of these contracts compensate in currency, they also crucially award status points with their respective factions, depending on the mission; occasionally, this reward comes at the cost of diminished reputation with another group. The higher your status within a given syndicate, the greater favor you have with them. For faction-aligned distributors across various planets, discover exclusive deals on equipment, customize your arsenal with unique upgrades, and gain access to rare items enhancing your abilities and proficiency. This gritty entry into the world of organized crime provides insight into the territorial divisions of various criminal outfits, spanning from modest outposts to sprawling urban domains. If Kay’s status is perceived as pleasant, she can move about freely in those areas without drawing attention to herself; however, if she is exceptionally well-regarded, she may be able to discreetly acquire a significant number of objects she discovers are stashed throughout the area.

In essence, this implies the presence of an alternative response if her status wavers, crafting a “most intriguing sense of player friction” that remains faithful to the fantasy of playing a scoundrel. Being stuck with a subpar service status could mean facing inflated charges for providers, or worse, being entirely locked out of certain options. The company’s limited capacity would hinder its potential to secure lucrative deals offering substantial returns. As you previously navigated through open spaces without hindrance, an unanticipated shift occurs, transforming the terrain into a restricted area that demands covert operations or, worse still, a deadly ‘shoot-on-sight’ policy, whereupon the concerned faction becomes sufficiently enraged to dispatch hit squads in pursuit of you, regardless of your location. The inherent tension between push and pull is compounded by the fact that many reputation-influencing actions, such as contracts, inherently carry a threat component: the higher the potential reward, the more likely the mission will involve caveats, like completing tasks without raising alarms or having only one chance to succeed at all.

On this subtle balance of contradictions, the scoundrel’s complex personality truly comes alive. Not everyone’s pleased all the time, and these reputations don’t define you forever. At any moment, there exists a possibility for a change in your standing with one or more factions, which can, in turn, provide an opportunity to redeem yourself and regain their favor. As you cultivate steadiness in your nefarious pursuits, an unsettling familiarity with infamy begins to take hold, prompting introspection into the depths of your own morality and the motivations driving your actions in each fleeting moment. Is it truly worth sacrificing one faction’s favor at this moment to curry favor with another? Is it worth streamlining your mission by cultivating relationships through calculated networking before approaching a syndicate-managed space – these questions constantly weigh on your mind, imbuing ‘programs’ with significant character.

While the faction system has its unique charm, it remains largely irrelevant unless you venture into the open world’s optional activities and side quests. The narrative’s influence on the system is driven by shifts in your reputation among certain factions, which can have positive or negative effects. The trajectory of my primary narrative suffered a jarring dip when my rapport with one particular faction plummeted in an instant, only to recover swiftly as the mission resumed, thereby diminishing the overall impact of those pivotal moments.

As the narrative unfolds, the prison’s undercurrents render it even less hospitable, gradually introducing Imperial influences that reshape the setting and precipitate a power struggle between rival factions within the walls – an enemy force so inconsequential, you can fight them without worrying about repercussions or maintaining standing with them. It’s a profound embarrassment, especially since the system’s inherent flaws are initially masked by its ability to explore a range of perspectives and emotions. However, it ultimately fails to muster the courage to confront those same flaws consistently.

… And Wretched Hives

Here is a superb playground where you can place all your content, doing an excellent job overall. The narrative spans five major planets, with the town of Canto Bight on Kay’s homeworld of Cantonica serving as a bookend, while Toshara – a newly introduced world -, Tatooine, Kijimi, and Akiva represent the other typical hubs visited throughout the story. Four distinct biomes and environments, characterized by varying scales, come together in the game’s settings, including Kijimi – the smallest setting, which is a densely packed, snow-covered metropolitan area where buying and selling occur alongside intense rivalries. On Tatooine, amidst a vast expanse of arid terrain, scattered settlements thrived – from humble villages to sprawling metropolises like the infamous Mos Eisley and the bustling Mirogana – punctuating the seemingly endless expanse of sandy dunes and flat steppes. Akiva resides at a nexus of contrasts, where lush tropical forests and verdant foliage give way to pockets of urbanization, creating an intriguing blend of primal wildness and cultivated refinement. Every planet’s scope feels surprisingly navigable, regardless of scale; fleeting travel options emerge, though scarce and occasionally inaccessible, pending one’s faction standing, rendering Kay’s reliable speeder bike an indispensable tool for traversing the galaxy.

This concept applies far less explicitly to ‘restricted strategies in isolated settings.’ In every world, a compact orbital map provides gamers with a platform to pilot Kay’s versatile ship, allowing for dogfights or scavenging for resources in asteroid fields, while occasional missions transport players to celestial bodies – though these are relatively rare compared to those where they’ll have the chance to set foot on the ground. While often overlooked, the thrill of navigating through hyperspace is a unique pleasure – calculating one’s trajectory and executing a precise jump to a new destination is always satisfying, whether flying through various environmental layers or transitioning between areas to floors.

Despite the abundance of activities to be found on each planet, it never feels like you’re merely exploring, whether in terms of space or terrain, solely for the sake of adventure. There’s an astonishing abundance of richness when it comes to Star Wars aspect content: missions, factional contracts, commerce, supply upgrades, treasure caches, minigames – from high-stakes Sabacc matches and pulse-pounding speeder races to Fathier betting and hidden arcade games nestled in a cantina’s quiet corner. The immersive atmosphere is palpable throughout, allowing players to comfortably rest against railings or bars, taking in meticulously crafted environments, or discreetly gather information on hidden caches or mission options by eavesdropping on conversations near strategic walls. While it may not become overly demanding, you’ve amassed sufficient material to explore outside the primary narrative and fill in gaps without compromising the core story’s flow.

This equally applies to Kay’s talents. Unfortunately, there are no RPG elements to uncover here, neither in terms of equipment statistics nor level progression, nor skill trees to invest time and effort into. As a substitute, consultants: nine enigmatic figures Kay encounters throughout her galactic journey, each representing a distinct facet of the morally ambiguous scoundrel trade, come together through a shared mission that ultimately humanizes their various motivations and philosophies. A skilled Devoted to upgrading your speeder bike, granting increased handling and agility, or alternatively equipping you with more potent heavy weaponry or enhanced slicing tools to take down enemies with greater efficiency. Establishing a rapport with a seasoned expert does not translate to effortless access to their proficiency and benefits; instead, it requires a combination of procuring specific resources and items in the open world, as well as achieving distinct, relevant gameplay objectives?

While consultants’ relationships to the primary story are crucially important compared to their status within it, they lack the same level of fascinating tension and push-and-pull as the original narrative system. However, some early discoverable consultants can aid in advancing the plot, and a select few possess expertise that simplifies encounters—consultants thereby add an additional layer of depth to the ‘scoundrel fantasy’ genre.

While it may not be immediately apparent, Kay’s narrative desire is actually to highlight her ordinariness, underscoring that she’s just another regular person in the galaxy, navigating her way through life by leveraging relationships and knowledge gained along the way?

Incalculable probabilities surround us all the time, but what are the chances of actually learning them?

On a subtle yet undeniable sense of roguish charm, the narrative truly comes alive and reaches its zenith. The game’s meticulous attention to detail ‘crafts a lived-in galaxy’, where even the most mundane alleyways hum with energy, and the nostalgic ’70s flair of its UI is a love letter to its world – as anyone enamored with Han Solo since his debut in A New Hope can attest. The immersive experience is akin to little else in gaming, marrying engaging narratives and captivating visuals to transport players into the uncharted reaches of a galaxy far, far away – perfectly capturing the essence of playing an intergalactic rogue. As you’ve concluded your primary narrative, the thrill of venturing into the galaxy persists, whether you’re occupied with odd jobs, gathering scattered rumors, scavenging for valuable relics or navigating Imperial outposts under the cover of night, or simply discovering a cantina where you can sit back and immerse yourself in the atmosphere for a while.

Recent releases in the video game genre, such as [insert examples], offer distinct, immersive experiences that cater to various tastes. Meanwhile, [game title] sets itself apart from others by delivering a unique narrative perspective that shines through its high-quality production values.

While it’s understandable that the fantastical elements may initially grab attention, they somewhat detract from the otherwise unremarkable open-world design. The game’s standout features, initially promising, are relegated to the periphery, compromising a predictable yet passable linear motion experience, ultimately falling short of excellence due to an inability to commit to their full potential? Here: The template presents a solid foundation for successors to build upon in their first foray into open-world gaming – an impressive standard for video games to strive towards, executed with endearing bombast, akin to a scoundrel’s flair. A mischievous glint and a willingness to take risks can indeed propel you forward, even in the most unpredictable of circumstances.

The highly anticipated sports game is set to launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S on August 30, with early access available for those who pre-order starting August 27. A duplicate game was offered by Ubisoft for evaluation purposes.
