Spotify’s lyrics are once more inaccessible to non-paying users.

Spotify users can once again view lyrics in real-time while listening to their favorite tracks on the platform. In November, Spotify began testing a feature that started as a pilot last fall, requiring users to pay for a premium subscription to access song lyrics and additional features. Although free customers may still listen to tracks, they are limited to just three songs per month. Spotify is lifting its limit on lyric views for free users, enabling them to access unlimited song lyrics without restrictions.

At Spotify, constant experimentation and refinement are core to our DNA. A Spotify representative clarified to Engadget that the availability of their options may vary across tiers, markets, and devices. As we approach the forthcoming period, we will be expanding access to lyrics on Spotify for all free users worldwide, thereby allowing more people to appreciate and engage with song lyrics.

As anticipated, the initial move to offer free access to lyrics without a paid customer base provoked significant backlash early this year. Spotify may have taken this tack to incentivize users to upgrade to its premium plans, which start at $11 per month for music streaming services. This month, Spotify CEO Daniel Ek revealed the company’s plans to upgrade offerings for its free users. Apparently, a comprehensive update log now comprehensively reinstates the entirety of song lyrics.

“We’re focusing on upgrading our free offerings, driven by current market efficiencies in specific regions,” Ek stated during the announcement. “Upgrades to our complimentary expertise will be integrated and rolled out over the next few months.”
