Roku’s new Sports activities Channel
Starting Monday, August 12, Roku customers can access the new FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television) channel, Roku Sports Network. This will be a 24/7 streaming channel offering comprehensive coverage of the most popular sporting events and sports-related programming. Will likely be an ad-supported service that is freely available to all Roku customers.
The Sports Activities Channel offers a diverse range of programming, featuring live MLB games, including its popular Sunday Leadoff broadcasts, as well as thrilling racing events from Formula E. Additionally, the network is home to several highly acclaimed sports talk shows, such as The Rich Eisen Show and GMFB: Overtime. Roku’s original content lineup fills voids by showcasing diverse professional leagues through unique properties like NFL Draft: The Pick is In, WWE: Next Gen, and Battle Inside the Octagon: Contained in the UFC.
Complementing the channel’s content, we’ve introduced two new features: a focus on boxing and professional poker.
Head of Sports at Roku Media, Joe Franzetta, describes Roku Sports Channel as “a constantly available, curated platform that guides viewers through an extensive range of premium sports content free on The Roku Channel.”
Roku appears poised to capitalize on a gap in the sports streaming market by offering its new service. Roku’s Director of Product for Sports, Drew Adams, recently told Terrible Saying, “We recognized that the sports industry continued to fragment weekly, monthly, and month-to-month, with various rightsholders entering the picture or leagues having distinct distribution channels.” So after assessing the situation, we identified an opportunity for Roku to increase its value; it was a space where we genuinely could make a difference, right? By streamlining access to sports content in a single location, we can effectively cater to the consumer’s needs.
As streaming services continue to evolve, determining access to specific content has become increasingly complex; therefore, a unified and free platform that aggregates all sports content could be a game-changer.
The Roku Sports Channel will not replace existing sports channels on the service. These specific person-based subscriptions and individual channels will continue to be supported and function normally.
Starting August 12, users can access the Roku Sports Channel at no cost via any Roku streaming device, the Roku app, or the official Roku website upon its launch.
