Report: Apple testing next-gen Apple Watch SE made with plastic to chop prices

Apple is reportedly working on a new iteration of its entry-level smartwatch series alongside the Apple Watch Series 10 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. According to a recent report, Apple is reportedly considering a significant redesign for its upcoming Apple Watch SE model: a shift from traditional glass or metal materials to a more affordable and eco-friendly plastic casing.

The Apple Watch SE is constructed from aluminum, akin to its premium counterparts in the Apple Watch lineup. Upon updating the Apple Watch SE in 2022, Apple revamped the watch’s casing by switching from ceramic to a nylon composite material for the rear case.

According to Mark Gurman’s review of the latest Apple Watch SE iteration, there’s a possibility that the device might abandon its traditional aluminum casing in favour of an inflexible plastic material.

Apple is reportedly working on an updated version of its affordable Apple Watch SE model, which was last refreshed in 2022. The corporation has been exploring an alternative to the traditional aluminum casing, considering a switch to rigid plastic instead.

While the initial report lacks detailed specifications, its primary objective appears to be reducing costs by developing a cost-effective alternative. If Apple were to manufacture the Apple Watch SE using plastic instead of aluminum, a theoretical cost reduction could potentially lead to a lower starting price point, currently set at $249.
