As Black History Month unfolds with its rich significance, it’s crucial to pause and reflect upon this year’s theme: “Black Art – A Fusion of African, Caribbean, and Black American Cultures and Experiences.”
As part of its mission to promote diversity and inclusion, our worker-owned cooperative’s community program, BEACON, embarked on an initiative to celebrate and elevate the creative expressions of Black artists.
The theme functioned as a unifying force behind BEACON’s efforts throughout the month, establishing a vibrant and immersive space for discovery, skill-building, and commemoration.
As I delve into the world of Black Artwork this month, I’ve embarked on a revelatory odyssey of self-discovery and communal bonding. The intersectional perspectives of African, Caribbean, and Black American cultures infuse artworks with rich narratives, showcasing community resilience and vibrant identities.
Artwork is more than just an expression – it’s a testament to the shared human experiences that shape our perspectives on reality, bearing witness to the complexities and nuances that define us as individuals and communities.
During BEACON’s celebration of Black History Month, the event took on a unique and vibrant form. Within the past year, we made the deliberate decision to elevate the perspectives of our Black colleagues at DataRobot through a dedicated podcast series focused on the rich cultural heritage of Black Art. As the episode unfolded, it meticulously examined the rich narratives embedded within diverse forms of art, revealing how these creative mediums serve as powerful vehicles for preserving cultural heritage, promoting social activism, and conveying personal sentiments.
As we produced the podcast episode, we directly experienced the remarkable power of storytelling to bring about a deeper understanding and foster unity among its listeners. Our company’s stories shed light on the frequently overlooked aspects of Black artistry, highlighting its capacity to challenge stereotypes, drive transformation, and instill joy within local communities.
As we conclude Black History Month, the reverberations of our discussions, stories, and artistic expressions continue to resonate. The concept of Black Artistry has etched a profound impression on our shared awareness, sparking sustained inquiry, discourse, and tribute to the richly woven fabric that comprises the vast knowledge base of the African diaspora. As we navigate this path, it’s essential to acknowledge that the journey is ongoing, a continuous quest to unravel the intricate web of stories and the lasting impact of Black Artistry in forging a more compassionate and enlightened society.

As the Program Supervisor of Learning and Innovation at DataRobot, Lelia Colley plays a pivotal role in driving growth and progress. As BEACON’s neighborhood chief, she oversees collaborative efforts with her core team to develop resources and events that cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion within the workplace. Lelia seamlessly integrates diversity, equity, and inclusion best practices into her role by championing and securing resources for innovative academic programs, workshops, and tools that foster a culture of inclusivity within our organization. Outside of labor, she delights in embarking on adventures with loved ones and discovering hidden gems in her hometown of Selma, Alabama.
