The prospect of democratic regression is growingly perturbing in Europe, Latin America, and even within the United States, prompting concern among political scientists about the erosion of democratic norms. While individual efforts may not halt the erosion of democratic norms, we can collectively concentrate on identifying and elucidating the underlying causes, then develop strategies to ensure the healthy operation of democratic systems.
The Department of Political Science at MIT has a distinguished history of generating cutting-edge research across various facets of democratic governance, encompassing voting behaviors, election management, information dissemination and misinformation, public opinion dynamics, and the influence of lobbying practices. What’s the initiative’s analysis focus?
The initiative is built on three analytical pillars. Election science and administration are one of the crucial pillars. Democracy relies heavily on the success of well-run elections and, equally crucial, widespread trust in their integrity. Across the United States and globally, significant disparities exist within electoral processes, encompassing registration methods, voting modalities – be it in-person or by mail – polling station operations, vote counting and validation protocols, and outcome dissemination to citizens.
The MIT Election Knowledge and Science Lab has established itself as the country’s premier hub for collecting, analyzing, and disseminating election-related data and best practices, uniquely poised to amplify its impact and expand its reach.
The second pillar focuses on public opinion, a fertile ground for investigation that combines experimental research on public reactions to misinformation with examinations of presidential responsiveness to mass attitudes. Our school leverages survey and experimental methodologies to comprehensively evaluate a diverse range of subject matters, including taxation and health policy, as well as state and local politics, with a focus on effective strategies for debunking political misinformation in the United States. and overseas. The School’s research initiatives, including the Political Experiments Analysis Lab, have fostered a collaborative environment through programs like our annual omnibus survey, open to students and faculty, as well as regular conferences and seminars that bring people together.

The initiative is designed to equip students with diverse perspectives on democratic processes, thereby providing schools with a readily available pool of skilled students to support their projects. I aim to equip college students with the tools and opportunities to test their own hypotheses by developing and executing surveys in the United States. By analyzing domestic and international data, researchers leverage the tools of computer science, statistical analysis, and various fields to scrutinize political occurrences. As the initiative expands, I anticipate additional opportunities for college students to partner with state and local officials on innovations in election administration, and to tackle fresh challenges related to healthy democracies?
Postdoctoral researchers will assume a pivotal role by driving innovation across the initiative’s core pillars, mentoring undergraduate researchers, and managing various administrative aspects of the project.

A perpetual initiative will consistently provide the framework for school and college students to respond promptly to contemporary developments and emerging research findings – such as by initiating a nationwide survey experiment, collecting novel insights on an aspect of the electoral process, or investigating the impact of a newly introduced AI technology on political attitudes. New challenges to democratic stability continue to emerge, ones that were unforeseen a decade ago; it’s likely that similar surprises await us another 10 years down the line. We must be prepared to tackle whatever challenges arise with a robust and thorough evaluation process.
