We provide publicly accessible lifecycle assessments detailing the environmental impact of our products.

We are pleased to announce the publication of life cycle assessments (LCAs) for select Cisco hardware products.

Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) quantify the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle, encompassing production, transportation, utilization, and disposal or recycling processes. A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) considers various environmental impact categories, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, water usage, and resource depletion, to evaluate the entire lifecycle of a product by compiling relevant environmental inputs in a comprehensive manner.

We produce comprehensive reports and concise, two-page summaries highlighting key findings on the environmental impact of products, specifically their greenhouse gas emissions.

Product life cycle assessments (LCAs) offer numerous benefits, including:

  • What’s the carbon footprint of that router you’re about to purchase?
  • Assessing the overall ecological impact and Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions of clients’ information technology infrastructure to empower informed decision-making.
  • Enhancing Cisco product designs requires identifying innovative alternatives to minimize energy consumption, maximize resource utilization, and reduce waste.
  • Empowering Cisco to identify and address specific hotspot components, thereby streamlining the prioritization of corrective measures for high-impact areas.
  • Addressing product ecolabel necessities
  • Implementing best practices from our findings will significantly enhance Cisco’s.

Our team within the Cisco Chief Sustainability Office is collaborating with counterparts from our Supply Chain organization and Product Group teams to deliver these findings. As our research progresses and the findings become more available, we intend to disseminate the studies through publication.

Our aspiration is to have Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) provide unparalleled visibility into a product’s atmospheric footprint, thereby empowering Cisco teams to create sustainable products that consider the environment and enhance transparency around product eco-impacts for both Cisco and its customers.

While many knowledge-based companies make Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) publicly available, Cisco stands out as a pioneer in providing such reports for its networking equipment, including Catalyst switches.

For further information on our Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, please refer to our published research reports. We plan to further refine our methodology, thoroughly evaluate our products, and disseminate the findings to promote ongoing transparency. As part of our strategy to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2040, we will also utilize the LCAs to inform our progress and adjustments along the way.
