Google’s latest event didn’t quite shine with the unveil of new Pixel phones. Additionally, they unveiled new Nest devices, including a successor to the Chromecast, set to replace it. Although the Chromecast with Google TV is being discontinued, Google ensures its continued support through regular software updates, including a forthcoming upgrade to Android 12 behind the scenes, Google TV product managers worked diligently. As the latest technology hits the market, inevitable concerns surround its performance, capabilities, and user experience. People’s curiosity persisted about whether specific features in Android TV 14 might be incompatible with older devices, despite the promise of a seamless upgrade experience.

The introduction of new Android TV 14 methods appears uncertain, as a few of these approaches are unlikely to be compatible with every device. While instances of the Thread border router performance necessitate a Thread radio, this technology is still largely absent from many modern devices. When these units receive a firmware update to enable TV replacement capabilities, they will not be able to function as thread border routers.

The discussion seemingly centered on the possibility that this could apply specifically to the Chromecast with Google TV instance. Despite improvements, this device will not be able to utilize Thread options like the new Google TV Streamer can, simply because it lacks the necessary components within.

Google’s decision to give the Chromecast with Google TV a software update isn’t entirely surprising? They pledged to continue providing software support and security updates for the Chromecast device after announcing their decision to phase out the older model. The Chromecast with Google TV (4K) will receive security updates until the end of September 2025, while the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) is supported until the end of September 2027.
