President Sally Kornbluth and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman chart a course for AI’s future | MIT Technology Review

What implications will the rapid evolution of synthetic intelligence have on the future of work, education, and human society as a whole? MIT President Sally Kornbluth and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman convened for a comprehensive conversation on MIT’s campus on May 2, covering a broad range of topics.

As OpenAI’s ChatGPT behemoth language models have achieved unprecedented success, they’ve triggered a surge in investment and innovation within the realm of artificial intelligence. After its release at the end of 2022, ChatGPT-3.5 rapidly became the fastest-growing consumer software programme in history, with hundreds of millions of people using the application. Since its initial debut, OpenAI has showcased a range of AI-powered products, including those for generating images, audio, and videos, and formed a strategic partnership with Microsoft.

As the packed Kresge Auditorium witnessed the triumph of the second-round AI, attendees couldn’t help but look forward to what was yet to come.

“Many of us still vividly recall our initial encounter with ChatGPT and were struck by its revolutionary potential.” “What lies ahead for us as we strive to envision the future?”

As he sees it, the lofty anticipations surrounding his company and the broader field of artificial intelligence are a welcome challenge.

“According to Altman, it’s striking that just two weeks after the initial hype surrounding ChatGPT-4, the public’s attention had already shifted, with people now clamoring for news about GPT-5.” “I firmly assert that there is a legitimate virtue in human aspirations and the pursuit of excellence, emphasizing the importance for each of us to strive for improvement.”

In the initial stages of their conversation, Kornbluth and Altman touched upon the plethora of ethical conundrums surrounding the development of artificial intelligence.

“We’ve achieved notable success in harmonizing our system around core values,” Altman said. Individuals often wish to argue that certain tools can’t be used because they constantly emit toxic pollutants. However, GPT-4 operates somewhat as desired, allowing us to instruct it to adhere to specific principles, albeit not flawlessly, but exceeding my initial expectations at this stage.

The absence of consensus on the behavioral norms for artificial intelligence systems in various scenarios is hindering the development of a unified code of conduct, as observed by Altman.

What values should a system embody? Altman inquired. What functions should a system perform to achieve its intended purpose? To what extent do societal norms dictate the limits of trust versus allowing individuals to set their own parameters when it comes to using technology such as social media, GPS tracking, or other monitoring devices in personal relationships? Not everyone will utilize them as we prefer, but that’s simply a reality when it comes to instruments. While providing ample autonomy is crucial, it’s equally vital to establish clear boundaries by identifying specific instances where intervention is necessary; a collective effort to determine these exceptions will be instrumental in striking a balance.

While acknowledging that eliminating bias from AI processes can be a challenging task, Kornbluth concurred that addressing this issue is crucial.

“It’s intriguing to ponder whether future human societies might strive to eliminate biases that are inherent in our fashion choices, just as we continue to evolve towards a more inclusive and diverse world.”

Kornbluth highlighted concerns over the unprecedented amounts of data required to train today’s massive language models, raising questions about privacy implications. Since the dawn of the web, society has wrestled with these concerns; yet, AI is exacerbating them in profound ways. As AI’s potential for efficacy grows, he also ponders novel concerns and uncertainties that arise from this prospect.

“What are our strategies for reconciling the competing demands of privacy, utility, and security?” The threshold where individuals consciously balance competing priorities, yielding potential advantages when the system learns from their entire life journey, presents a novel challenge for societal adaptation. “I’m uncertain about potential answers.”

While private concerns about AI’s impact on power consumption persist, Altman is optimistic that advancements in AI models will help alleviate these issues.

“What we ultimately want from GPT-5 or GPT-6, regardless of version number, is a highly effective reasoning engine,” Altman emphasized. Although it’s currently possible to achieve this through extensive training on massive amounts of data? Throughout this course, we are examining the intricacies of highly controlled reasoning and cognition processes. While it remains uncertain whether AI can truly memorize knowledge or merely store it in its parameters, I think we’ll reassess this claim and say, ‘That was a peculiar misuse of resources.’ I predict that at some point, we’ll develop a way to decouple the reasoning engine from the need for vast amounts of information stored within [the model], allowing us to tackle these issues separately.

Will Kornbluth inquire about the potential for artificial intelligence to displace jobs?

“One of the most exasperating aspects of AI proponents’ rhetoric is when they confidently assert, without a hint of self-awareness, that their creation will inevitably spark zero job losses.” This seemingly innocuous statement has far-reaching implications for our understanding of the subject at hand? “That’s exactly what I’m looking for – everything being just fine,” Altman said. “That’s likely to eliminate many current roles, modify how others operate, and bring forth entirely new ones.” That always occurs with utmost expertise.

As AI’s momentum accelerates, tackling its current challenges will likely become increasingly costly.

“According to Altman, if just one percent of global electricity were invested in developing a powerful AI and that AI enabled us to identify viable pathways for non-carbon-based energy or significantly enhance carbon sequestration rates, the outcome would be a resounding success.”

The scientist mentioned that his primary focus on applying AI lies in facilitating groundbreaking scientific discoveries.

“I firmly believe that scientific discovery serves as the driving force behind human advancement, being the sole catalyst for propelling sustainable financial growth.” People are dissatisfied with GPT-4. The organization requires increased priorities to rise. People universally aspire to elevate their lives and accelerate progress, and scientific advancements are the key to achieving this.

Kornbluth also sought Altman’s expert opinion on how to guide college students interested in pursuing their chosen career paths. He implored college students to shun restrictive thinking and unlock their full potential.

“An essential takeaway for professionals is that no one has all the answers from the start, so it’s crucial to develop problem-solving skills and learn as you go.” As you navigate your path, it’s essential to strike a balance between experimentation and focus, allowing yourself to organically gravitate toward the most captivating topics and influential individuals. By embracing an iterative process, you can incrementally refine your approach until you reach a desired outcome. “You possess the capability to achieve more than you currently envision, and often before you even realize it.”

Altman’s recommendation formed a cornerstone of his broader message emphasizing the importance of maintaining optimism and proactive measures to shape a more promising future.

“The notion that educators are conditioning young minds to accept the futility of tackling global problems and that all we can do is wallow in despair, contemplating the hopelessness of it all, is an intensely unproductive and misguided approach,” he said. I’m eager to experience what makes MIT’s campus truly unique, unlike many other institutions I’ve visited. I assume it’s. It is essential that you dedicate yourself to combating this issue as an integral component of your personal and professional journey. Prospering in abundance, we envision a brighter future unfolding next year, where our children thrive and flourish alongside us. That’s the solely path ahead. “It’s crucial that we adopt a sole strategy for a functioning society, one that prioritizes progress and individual fulfillment – anything less would be antithetical to our shared values.”
