Until recently, electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar has consistently exhibited the refined sensibilities of its Volvo roots, evident in the sleek design of its SUV coupé.
As it distances itself from its Swedish heritage, Chinese-owned Volvo subsidiary Polestar is poised to trade sophistication for speed, unveiling a concept roadster at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed in England.
Polestar will soon introduce its sixth vehicle, the BST, joining a lineup that already includes the Polestar 2 fastback, launched in 2019, the Polestar 3, which debuted approximately 18 months ago, and most recently, the similarly named Polestar 4 crossover.
On the drawing board, pending confirmation, are the Polestar 5, a fully electric four-door grand tourer, and the Polestar 6, an upcoming roadster, both first showcased in 2022 with expected arrival dates slated for 2026.
“Polestar unveiled its latest concept, the BST, boasting bespoke bodywork finished in a classic motorsport silver hue, characterized by flared arches, an expansive front monitor, and 22-inch forged alloy wheels.” A sculpted bonnet, precision-crafted for maximum aerodynamic efficiency, features a unique ventilation system that enhances airflow, and is elegantly bordered by a bold, angular entrance splitter. The motorsport aesthetic is carried through to the rear, characterized by an exaggerated rear wing and a design that incorporates bespoke racing livery-inspired graphics.
While Elon Musk is attempting to polish a Hummer’s rough edges with the Cybertruck, it has been 16 years since Tesla first burst onto the scene with its pioneering Roadster – an innovative single model that laid the groundwork for what was to come. The Tesla Model S Plaid takes this momentum further, boasting a thrilling Colin McRae-inspired level of raciness at the wheel.
While many others are having a blast indoors, the new generation of electric vehicles is gaining momentum, with Porsche’s innovative Taycan and Taycan Cross Turismo leading the pack. The Polestar 4 is widely regarded as a direct competitor to the upcoming Porsche Macan Electric.
As I slip into the driver’s seat of the Polestar Idea BST, an unmistakable aura of Porsche 911 wafts through the air – a testament to the Swedish marque’s unwavering commitment to precision and performance. The subtle angularity of the design has been subtly tempered by more fluid, curvaceous lines evoking a nod to Polestar’s German heritage.
Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath echoed Nigel Tufnel’s sentiments, extolling the virtues of the new Idea BTS: “This vehicle exemplifies our unwavering commitment to efficiency, as we’ve taken Polestar to 11 – a testament to our ability to integrate BST technology into future models.”
There are no specifics around worth but – likely around a tenth of the price of a Polestar. However, there’s talk of 1,000hp and a sub-3 second 0-100km/h, in a souped-up model of the Polestar, boasting 884 hp and a 3.2 sec 0-100 for the Polestar 6, alongside a 250km/h high-speed limit to zip you round a Westfield carpark in record time.
