Cybersecurity journalist Joe Tidy found himself an unlikely target when a scammer, self-proclaimed as “Jessica”, zeroed in on him, revealing his ordeal in a recent report.
A woman claiming to be a 36-year-old from Chicago initiated contact with Tidy through Instagram, posing as someone lovely.
Day after day, Jessica’s relentless calls to Tidy, typically around 4pm, were met with an unsuspecting target – an investigative journalist with a knack for tracking down fraudsters and scammers.
“Jessica went out of her way to charm Tidy, praising his lovable nature.” The journalist found her to be “incredibly flirtatious.”

After a four-week period of secrecy, Jessica finally disclosed her monumental revelation. As she had grown wealthy through shrewd investments in cryptocurrency, she was willing to reveal the intricacies of her strategy to Tidy, provided he demonstrated a willingness to follow her guidance.
Tidy was explicitly instructed by “Jessica” to treat her as “Miss Queen” and comply with every directive, which entailed agreeing to travel to Chicago to procure a romantic gift or dinner for her using a portion of the profits she guaranteed he would earn.
Despite his initial reservations, Tidy found himself becoming embroiled in the scammer’s elaborate plan. A quick online investigation revealed that the lavish images ostensibly showcasing Jessica’s life actually originated from a prominent German social media personality.
Upon discovering that her photographs were being misused to perpetuate pig-butchering scams, the influencer sought guidance from a concerned German individual whose original content had been exploited by scammers.
Unfortunately, as it has become a massive industry that poses significant risks to unsuspecting investors. According to the FBI, an estimated billions of dollars have been lost by unsuspecting victims.
Fraudsters perpetuating pig-butchering scams dupe victims into unwittingly building up their financial worth, only to be mercilessly exploited and left financially drained. Scammers often engage victims in extended online conversations, making them believe they’ve inadvertently expressed romantic interest in themselves through repeated interactions on social media or dating platforms.
In a devastating turn of events, the unsuspecting victim finds themselves financially drained after being duped by deceitful means, only coming to terms with their loss when it’s too late. Typically, the cash is drained gradually through dubious cryptocurrency investment schemes over an extended period until all funds are depleted.
When Jessica requested preliminary funding from Tidy, she manipulated him into participating in a series of fake cryptocurrency investments, showcasing “profits” that supposedly grew over time.
The revelation finally came: Tidy was actually a seasoned cybersecurity reporter all along. Considering it’s not uncommon for individuals employed in the pork-processing industry to have a certain understanding of anatomy, he asked for further clarification.
“Jessica”, claiming to be primarily located in a prominent business district in Dubai, told Tidy that she faced the threat of sexual violence unless she could raise $500 by that evening.
After some time had passed, Jessica’s silence became deafening; she ceased all communication and took the drastic step of blocking him from her social media accounts.
If you find yourself in the same situation, wondering whether you’ve been targeted by a scammer, it’s crucial to know how to respond.
Be vigilant whenever someone initiates contact with you. Consider leveraging video chat functionality on dating platforms to facilitate more authentic connections and foster trust among users. Avoid any request that asks you to send cash or invest in someone at all costs?
A healthy dose of scepticism when engaging in online interactions is essential.
Report any scams or fraudulent activities to the relevant authorities immediately, as this can help prevent others from falling victim to similar schemes and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
