I departed from that region during the early 1990s due to the overwhelming pressure of consistently working amidst severe budget constraints, with little alternative opportunities emerging. John motivated me to acquire the skills to send emails and teach others how to do so effectively. Throughout our time together, he continuously motivated me to persevere through setbacks and self-doubt, reminding me of my capabilities and potential in the tech industry. He has repeatedly put himself at risk by standing up for me in situations that have evolved into significant challenges. Without his effort, I would never have been considered for the opportunity. He cautioned me that his confidence in my abilities wasn’t based on our marital status; rather, it stemmed from his conviction that I possessed the skills to excel and wouldn’t falter. With his unique gift, he empowers people to perceive the radiant side of existence, instilling in them the conviction that we can achieve exceptional results despite the numerous hurdles we must surmount.

As is often the case with individuals from his generation who have dedicated their careers to the tech industry, John never received a formal education in software development or management. His diploma is in Philosophy. During his time at college, he acquired proficiency in various statistical software applications. He learned to teach himself how to code, examining and comprehending programs. Prior to his career in tech, John worked with individuals with disabilities in group homes. With an innate sense of empathy, he extends kindness to those less fortunate on Earth; whenever he encounters individuals exploiting their power over vulnerable others, he will firmly intervene to put a stop to such bullying behavior. Rather than resorting to confrontation and punishment, he advocated for employing optimistic reinforcement behavioral coaching methods with underperformers in the workplace, empowering them to become productive contributors. Years spent working with people with disabilities – a vital yet frequently undervalued and uncompensated contribution – ultimately yielded significant dividends in his subsequent career.

Jim Webber and I collaborated extensively with John in Calgary during the period spanning 2007 to 2008. Within 24 hours, our team transitioned seamlessly from a brief troubleshooting assignment to a comprehensive transformation project, marking a significant shift in scope and scale. While others became entangled in a labyrinth of vague, overwhelming strategy, John approached our sprawling enterprise with a thoughtful skepticism; he eschewed grandiose pronouncements for a nuanced, detail-oriented approach that fostered trust and credibility among the engineering teams by emphasizing education and inspiring good practices at their level.

John grasped that software development is a profoundly social endeavour, where transformative change often originates from grassroots efforts and daily practices, taking root in people’s convictions and manifesting itself through collective action. As I reflect on the impact of my profession on my career path, I recognize that a significant influence during that period has carried over to shape my actions today, as I deliberate on how to construct a meaningful professional life. At some point during the early 2010s, I felt compelled to establish a personal brand within my industry. Eventually, I noticed that I had forgotten something. With fleeting aspirations like mine, I’ve come to realize that a meaningful professional journey shouldn’t be confined to a single, brief stint – as exemplified by John’s extensive career. In its earliest stages, every interaction begins as a connection with a unique cluster of people who share distinct characteristics. Success, belief, and respect do not automatically carry over from one interaction to another; each encounter starts anew to build today’s method of collaborative working. At the heart of John’s enduring ability to rebuild workforce foundations lies a robust foundation of compassion and openness, coupled with an unwavering focus on the present moment, allowing him to repeatedly construct and refine his approach over several years.

Beyond our software development endeavors, we formed strong bonds over our mutual appreciation for British humor and science fiction; in fact, we often found ourselves laughing at our own foibles with a kindness that only comes from embracing one’s vulnerabilities. John’s exceptional life exemplified the harmonious integration of skills and endeavors achieved through a subtle blend of dedication, wit, and humility – a quietly profound leader, mentor, and friend.

This memorial proved to be a straightforward yet arduous task to commit to paper. Given John’s profound impact on my career, it’s effortless to extract the significance from the everyday challenges we face as consultants. As I stand here, it’s incredibly difficult to bring myself to bid farewell. It’s far too quickly.

What stands out for me is the recollection of humanity in those moments – the infectious laughter, John’s vivid storytelling, his wealth of expertise, and genuine desire to help others. As I’ve grown disconnected from the technical and venture aspects, my understanding has become rusty due to their relatively minor importance in my broader focus. Expertise is ephemeral and arrives with the velocity of a speeding bullet, leaving one breathless in its relentless pursuit. The shared experiences and interpersonal bonds forged during that training session were what truly brought our team together, rendering the entire experience a treasured memory.

John would often remark, “The individual in question is stuck in a rut.” I’ll help them see beyond the trees.” One aspect John cultivated in me during this formative period, though I wasn’t fully aware of it at the time. I am deeply grateful to have discovered his presence in my life.

Over a decade has passed since my collaboration with John, leaving me without any notable stories to recall. Notwithstanding his challenges with a typically difficult workforce, I wanted to describe how he managed them. Unassuming yet decisive, he neither monopolized discussions nor sought to assert his authority as group leader; instead, he struck a balance between listening and leading, his opinions forming organically through respectful consideration.

John’s responses were refreshingly candid and direct. A comedy routine with John was always a refreshing interlude, no matter how tumultuous the previous day had been. His quick wit and infectious sense of humor served as the secret ingredient that fostered camaraderie within his team.

As a truly exceptional mentor and leader, he demonstrated a rare ability to grant autonomy, frequently stepping back and allowing individuals to grow and flourish independently. He would intervene with gentle yet firm guidance, akin to a seasoned gardener nurturing young shoots, ensuring that our understanding of the situation unfolded organically and safely. Typically, this guidance was characterized by a mix of technical and internal elements on one hand, while also being influenced by political considerations and presented in a way that was client-facing and engaging. In most cases, physical affection was reserved for specific situations where it was explicitly reciprocated.

As time went on, John’s legacy extended beyond his immediate mentees, enabling him to shape a larger network of mentors and leaders in their own right. Without explicitly conveying himself as a model, he exemplifies effective leadership by personal example. The ineffable aspects of collaborating with John that brought me such joy are impossible to adequately describe, leaving me with a lingering sense of nostalgia. Regardless of their individual experiences, every person fortunate enough to collaborate with him undoubtedly sensed it.

Before I started working at TW, I had already been introduced to someone referred to as “QB”, which is a nickname for John. As a former integration developer, I previously worked alongside a team of talented professionals from Taiwan (TW), based in the same location. Throughout my inaugural day on the venture, an unexpected commotion erupted as QB suddenly leapt from his seat, bellowed “Dopio!” and hastily exited the room. As I stood there with no idea what was happening, the entire TW team suddenly materialized and exited the room together. As I initially found myself taken aback, the team leader subtly gestured for my attention, revealing that Dopio, a double espresso at Starbucks, was quarterback’s preferred beverage. When proclaiming “Dopio”, the quarterback employed a cryptic phrase that translated to “Let’s get moving, team – time for a coffee break.” That’s a particularly treasured memory of mine.

John and I worked diligently together from 2018 through to early 2020. During that period, I found myself sharing more meals with John than I did with my family. After joining Thoughtworks in 2017, I initially considered myself a non-core lateral hire and an individual with specialized skills that weren’t directly aligned with the company’s core business at the time. Following my encounter with John, I was based at the Calgary office, which at that point embodied TW’s “like college but with money” mantra – we were all young, it was unapologetically wild, and incredibly fun. As part of our long-term strategy, we were fortunate enough to secure the services of a highly experienced individual from TransCanada, renowned for his exceptional expertise and leadership capabilities. While I’m not thrilled about the prospect, I suppose there’s some merit to exploring this idea further. As soon as I sensed the atmosphere could turn, becoming even more finicky and tedious. Upon his arrival, it quickly became apparent that things were not what they seemed. John was remarkably youthful throughout his life. With an irrepressible zest for life, he was perpetually enthused and inquisitive, radiating an aura of boundless energy. As a result, he prioritized the two key factors essential for making this deal thrive: his expertise and the support of others.

I was consistently struck by his capacity to remain inquisitive about and intensely engaged with intricate technical matters. As many professionals move away from the manufacturing process to focus on management and administrative roles, John remained drawn to the heart of the operation: the steel itself. While it’s common for people to want to remain engaged, the rapid pace of change in today’s ever-evolving landscape can be a significant challenge for many to keep up with. However John did. He never tired of learning, and one could always discern the evident joy he derived from whatever pursuit engaged him.

I was once deeply impressed by his unique blend of humility and genuine interest in the lives of those around him. While you were together with John, he remained by your side. He was and engaged. With a wry and playful sense of humor. While always maintaining a subtle air of warmth, his eyes twinkled with a perpetual sense of good humour, a trait that often proved infectious. Wherever he went, he formed connections with people and created an atmosphere of ease for everyone around him. As he landed on the shopper’s website, he would have already meticulously planned his approach, effortlessly charming VPs and junior developers alike with his affable wit and banter. Establishing connections with influential people often appears effortless for a select few, but with John, I never detected any hint of transactionality in our interactions. He derived a palpable sense of satisfaction from fostering meaningful relationships. He displayed an identical fervor and curiosity towards his colleagues as he did towards the problems he tackled. As he effortlessly wove his magic, every moment seemed to unfold with an infectious enthusiasm that transformed even the most mundane experiences into delightful adventures. What truly stood out was how he managed to make the experience even more enjoyable. The mere memory of him still prompts a wry smile, as I’m astonished by my initial notion of his being a dull, uninviting figure. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to spend a few years around him as I did. I’ll miss him.

John reminded me early on in my career what effective management typically expects to see on a consistent basis. I initially detected his pseudonym on internal email distributions. Despite the passionate discussions surrounding a software development roadmap, his input consistently demonstrated a harmonious blend of thoughtfulness and consideration. As he shared his thoughts, his carefully crafted words seemed to effortlessly manipulate the audience, compelling others to hang on his every utterance.

While I was assigned to a project in Canada. I had worked with the same customer on various projects, so I finally got to put a name to the familiar face. Despite working on distinct projects, we shared a common workspace. Whenever I arrived, I knew he’d welcome me warmly; when departing, bid me farewell with equal enthusiasm. Despite the challenges he faced, he always maintained an optimistic demeanor, whether through a warm smile or a witty jest. I’ve learned to always feel empowered to request guidance whenever uncertainty arises? Before offering a response, he would take the time to listen attentively, pause thoughtfully, and deliberate carefully?

In leadership spheres, a well-worn adage holds that “At the end of the day, people won’t recall what you said or did; they’ll remember how you made them feel.” John excelled at making everyone feel heard. Since you felt heard, you also made an effort to actively listen to John as he shared his thoughts and ideas. While my entrepreneurial endeavor was brief-lived, the lessons I learned from his leadership style instilled in me the confidence to lead without formal authority.

He significantly expanded my comprehension of information platforms, plugging a significant gap in my knowledge base. I may never learn to hear John, but I’ve found I should listen to him. Though I lacked the insight to grasp the true depth of his data, it’s clear he comprehended the intricate details, from the forest’s grandeur to the smallest phloem and xylem, which collectively sustained the ecosystem’s fragile balance.

With a dry Canadian wit that belied his affable nature, he was game for being ridiculous, indulging in outlandish headlines and corny dad jokes with equal enthusiasm; yet, amidst the turmoil of a scathing critique, he remained magnanimous and composed, an unyielding bastion of good humour. It’s truly heartbreaking when someone has to confront their own mortality, acknowledging the brevity of life as they reflect on the journey thus far, celebrating the therapy that sustained them, the unwavering support of loved ones, and the devoted care of medical professionals. That’s precisely who he remained – a soul driven by hope’s relentless pursuit, until its promise dwindled, at which point he surrendered to the gentle solace of reality, walking the rest of the journey with tranquility and acceptance. As those who knew him intimately can attest, our good fortune lay in having shared his life; similarly, we may find ourselves blessed if we could muster the same courage, unwavering composure, and devotion to tend to those he has left in his wake. The hole in my data was another example of his diligence, a trait for which I have grown to appreciate him.

I struggled with a vast and ambiguous portfolio, frequently finding myself uncertain about the tasks I was undertaking. John’s warm and infectious smile, which will forever be etched in my memory as a symbol of encouragement, instilled in me an unshakeable sense of capability and optimism.

A stalwart proponent of harnessing individuals’ unique aptitudes and leveraging them to maximum effect. One of the earliest influencers to underscore the importance of human intuition in knowledge acquisition was he. Despite his hectic schedule, he made it a point to frequently drop by our workstations to regale us with tales of his latest cycling adventures, offer tips on savvy shopping strategies, and bring us up to speed on the latest technological innovations.

As a wise guide, he mentored not just myself, but anyone willing to listen and learn from his experience. He will undoubtedly be deeply mourned.

When I first encountered John Kordyback, he burst onto the scene of a project we were actively collaborating on. As a rookie, I initially struggled with anxiety. What was he doing in that spot? He gazed up at the sky, declaring confidently, “Air Cover!” As our friendship blossomed, I grasped the subtlety of his phrase, which conveyed “influencing people multiple tiers above what’s apparent from your perspective.”

John was consistently passionate about people, yet he never bought into pretentiousness. At one point, our conversation turned to the criticism some of our colleagues had leveled against the project, dismissing it as a “waterfall” approach. Since I couldn’t improve this text due to its brevity and unclear sentence structure, the answer is: SKIP He pressed his palm to his lips in a comical display of shock, only to have the wolfish glint of Kordyback’s smile creep across his face once more? “Don’t forget to remind them to take steps towards recovery.” He stated.

I recall meeting John during one of my initial endeavors in the realm of Twitter-based community building. With a keen sense of empathy and a unique insight, he brought a refreshing perspective to the table, considering the most essential aspects with remarkable clarity. As a current renter, I used to struggle trying to figure out how to navigate working with customers; however, John consistently proved himself to be a guiding influence, focusing on what truly mattered. What’s the best way to accelerate the development and delivery of value to our customers?

We’ve co-authored a series of influential books on the topic, including “Steady Supply”, “Lean Enterprise”, “The DevOps Handbook”, and “Speed Up”. These works have helped organizations around the world transform their software development processes.

John was a highly accomplished leader and problem solver who expertly navigated complex and ambiguous situations, consistently guiding teams and initiatives to achieve successful outcomes with ease. Because of his work implementing steady supply practices on mainframes for a large insurance company’s workforce, I had the opportunity to get to know him. He presented his views on this topic at a conference I coordinated in 2013. I have substantiated numerous examples on over 100 occasions throughout my career.

It was less about the specific actions John took and more about the manner in which he carried them out that truly set him apart as a unique individual to me. With a remarkable capacity to balance being deeply empathetic towards others while still radiating an aura of calm confidence. With unwavering enthusiasm, he would initiate interactions with warm, embracing hugs, taking the time to genuinely connect with those around him, while sprinkling cleverly crafted witty remarks throughout conversations to keep things engaging and lively. With unwavering empathy, he fostered an environment where everyone around him felt heard, valued, and genuinely understood. As he demonstrated exceptional empathy and compassion, it’s clear that his approach had a profound impact on those around him, complementing his impressive technical skills to drive success. By studying his example, I gained invaluable insights. I will deeply miss him.

It’s rare for someone as discerning and accomplished as him to be willing to set aside their impressive achievements to engage in deeply meaningful discussions that span everything from work and profession to household quirks and lighthearted exchanges about the hilarious differences between American and Canadian culture, not to mention enthusiastic conversations about the remarkable photographs he’d taken of his cat. I have learned a great deal from John, and I am deeply grateful for his teachings.

I’ve no fond memories of John’s lengthy Australian tour that extend beyond pondering the unexpected parallels between observing ice hockey and marriage counseling in Canada. With a penchant for injecting his mischievous humor and a wicked grin into any interaction, John brought a profound sense of empathy and communal bonding to every technical encounter he facilitated.

When John was actively engaged in the workforce, one could always count on his unwavering dedication to empowering every individual within that team; he relentlessly sought out each member, offering personalized support and encouragement to foster innovative thinking and fresh perspectives. John’s generosity didn’t stop at simply being beneficial with his time; instead, he genuinely embodied the spirit of pastoral care by bringing his extensive experience to every interaction.

As John articulately conveyed his enduring passion for his partner’s unwavering companionship, surrounded by the very individual he professed his adoration for, it became a poignant lesson in embracing vulnerability, basking in the euphoria of being deeply in love, and cherishing the importance of expressing heartfelt gratitude for all life’s blessings. John facilitated the development of numerous technologists who were fortunate enough to have received his guidance on critical problems seeking solutions. The fond memories of his compassionate and selfless nature, extending to all those around him, remain etched in my mind even a decade after we parted ways; I genuinely appreciate the man for that enduring quality.

Twenty-five years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting John during my initial stint in the tech industry as a software testing professional, shortly after my first experience working for an IT firm. John was asked to review my work and provide guidance and recommendations as needed. As a precocious child, I spent my formative years crafting Ruby scripts for automating checks and management procedures, only to have my superiors conclude that having a more experienced adult in the room would be beneficial for project success. After confirming with John what I had been working on, I often felt a sense of trepidation. My code successfully addressed the problems I sought to resolve, and its simplicity was undeniable. Having previously employed an early version of Watir, I caught the attention of its developer with my innovative usage. Notably, he praised my work, specifically highlighting areas I was uncertain about, while also offering constructive suggestions for improvement. He enthusiastically assisted me in sharing my ideas with the entire team, exhibiting a remarkably positive attitude towards even the most minute details.

In the years that followed, my emotional state would often become distressed, and John would arrive to inquire about my well-being. A request was made for me to convert a data radiator I had developed into a digital format, with the specific requirement being its creation in Microsoft Excel. After expressing my frustration to John about the impossibility of creating our required reporting dashboard in Excel, he retorted: “You’ll be able to do something with Excel if you actually must.” While his words were dismissive, he ultimately proved himself correct by teaching me how to make API calls and navigate Excel’s complexities to resolve the issue. I worked diligently, earning the satisfaction of my supervisors. Throughout the years, he would recount the tale, a wide grin spreading across his face, his eyes twinkling with delight. “I warned you that Excel can be pushed to accomplish things, even when you know you shouldn’t.”

To foster further exploration beyond a routine review, John suggested collaborative effort over individual scrutiny, allowing us to actively engage in joint problem-solving. We initiated pair programming experiments to explore the potential benefits of collaboration between testers and builders in accelerating software development projects, particularly in terms of improving quality and reducing defects through iterative refinement. By identifying a prime area for software testers to make a meaningful impact, we’ve also uncovered valuable insights on the benefits of pairing programmers with diverse skill sets. While John required guidance, I needed to teach him and personally master Test-Driven Development (TDD) myself; therefore, from that point forward, we paired up and I learned how to craft test-driven code using TDD, incrementally refining my skills with each individual test. As I transitioned into a role as an impartial marketing consultant, the time invested in my collaboration with John ultimately yielded significant dividends. With exceptional expertise, an unparalleled mastery of crucial tools, and the infectious impact of his sunny disposition and unwavering composure, even in the most turbulent environments. As I reflect on my journey, I’m reminded of the extraordinary opportunities that arose from a kind mentor’s vision, recognizing potential in a young, ambitious individual like myself. His guidance and encouragement allowed me to write articles and share insights at conferences, all thanks to his selfless investment in my growth.

What will stay with me most is my impression of John as a person beyond his technical expertise. Although our collaboration came to an end, we remained connected. As a seasoned marketing consultant, he proved an ideal sounding board for brainstorming innovative ideas and soliciting expert guidance whenever I faced challenging situations. Even if my thoughts were still developing, he would always offer constructive feedback in an encouraging manner. John would thoughtfully challenge my ideas, guiding me towards alternative perspectives without making me feel defensive or uncomfortable. As I navigated life’s twists and turns alone, my thoughts often drifted back to the possibility of our paths intersecting once more, as if fate would conspire to bring us together again in a chance encounter. I had always anticipated that a night out with John would entail indulging in exquisite cuisine, engaging in witty banter, swapping stories of personal struggles, and luxuriating in the finer things in life.
