This uncertainty arises because many believe open source will soon dominate both giant language models (LLMs) and AI in general. Possibly. While the OSI and others strive to refine their Open Source Definition (OSD), influential contributors like Meta are creating industry-shaping standards, self-identifying them as “open source,” despite vocal criticism from some who argue that this nomenclature does not align with the OSD. A leading advocate for open-source government in one industry reveals that developers are not embracing the open-source model. Based on his stance, “AI developers are indifferent to—and unswayed by—lectures from OSI or others about what ‘open’ truly means.” Zuckerberg actually suits that description. Without employing even a whisper of sarcasm, he embarked on an extended treatise praising the merits of open-source initiatives: “The path forward for Llama to become the industry standard lies in its unwavering commitment to being relentlessly innovative, efficient, and open, milestone by milestone.”

To seize the initiative, the OSI must adopt a balanced approach that combines principle with practicality, rather than blindly adhering to the strictures of its most zealous advocates. As such, we have a significant amount of untapped potential in the field of AI to cover.
