I’ve previously used a Mac running macOS High Sierra 10.13 with a 16TB external hard drive formatted to ExFAT, which serves as the primary “backup” storage for all computers in my household.
“I previously utilized a 5TB hard drive, formatted as HFS+, which stored my entire collection.” All eventualities listed below, which were not activated on the new drive, functioned perfectly. I decided to upgrade my existing workspace to a newer area. Given that my older Mac is compatible with the latest storage technology, I opted for the new drive to be formatted as exFAT, ensuring seamless compatibility should I need to transfer the data to a newer PC in the future.
The issues: On my Mac, I successfully copied files to a new drive using Time Machine and my cloud backup service seemingly has no issue recognizing the new files as matching existing backups, thus refraining from re-uploading them. That is nice.
Despite being installed on all my Windows machines, problems arose as soon as I introduced the new drive to them. Chrome occasionally fails to store downloaded files within its own boundaries, instead presenting an ambiguous error message. I am unable to manually add records data to the drive. I access the drive, navigate to the relevant folder, and explore its contents. There appear to be files present. But when I right-click and select New -> Wealthy Textual content Doc, Home windows instantly says “Unable to create file ‘foo’. “There appears to be insufficient space available on the disk.” There are various peculiarities, but these are the principal ones that stand out to me. When connecting to older HFS+ drives from my Windows machines, these eventualities function superbly, but unfortunately, they don’t work in the same way with newer ExFAT drives. I’ve attempted to access the drive through <machine><driveName>
Attempting to share specific individual folders on the drive? Identical outcomes. Why does my Mac seem to be establishing connections with Windows, and are there any fixes available?
Some innovative ideas are presented here. I’ll retain the backup drive on my Mac as long as that machine remains functional.
