According to OpenAI, the company has no immediate plans to unveil an API for its AI model capable of generating convincing movie simulations upon receiving a text description or reference image.
During an AMA session with OpenAI’s development team, Romain Huet, Head of Developer Expertise at OpenAI, stated that a Sora API is not currently on the radar. “We don’t currently have plans to develop a Sora API,” he said.
The potential reasoning lies in capability points. OpenAI faced pressure to temporarily shut down its Sora-powered video creation and modification suite just days after its debut, due to an overwhelming surge in traffic that far exceeded initial expectations. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman issued a formal apology on Tuesday.

“We substantially miscalculated demand for Sora,” he said. “It’s going to take some time to get everyone on board.” Trying to figure out the best way to accomplish this quickly!
After a hiatus, OpenAI reopened Sora waitlist registrations several days ago.
If OpenAI fails to prioritise its Sora API, it risks falling behind a key rival, Google, which has already launched a limited-access API for its video-generation model, Imagen Video, in early December. According to recent news from Google, the upcoming successor of Veo, which gained widespread attention for its exceptional output quality, is slated to receive an Application Programming Interface (API) by 2025.
AWS recently introduced a new API for its video model. Developing tailored generative video supply APIs for their specific fashion needs. One prominent agency, Runway, leverages its cutting-edge API to empower the world’s leading e-commerce companies to efficiently produce hundreds of thousands of videos for their patrons.
