California-based nonprofit, building tech incubators, launches Reservoir Farms, an innovative on-farm robotics incubator. Scheduled for Q1 2025 launch in the Central and Salinas Valleys, Reservoir Farms is poised to introduce an innovative ecosystem that supports agrobotics startups by offering a unique blend of resources.
The concept of Agrobotics Hub offers a straightforward premise: providing a dedicated space for innovative agrobotics startups to rapidly prototype, test, and refine their ideas. Companies participating in the incubator gain access to their own secure storage facilities, complemented by a state-of-the-art maker space featuring machine tools, welders, CNC routers, and 3D printers to enable rapid prototyping of innovative ideas. On each campus, controlled environments, also known as check fields, could be established to facilitate continuous and year-round testing of robotic systems.
Establishing a productive partnership with a reliable grower or farmer willing to test innovative equipment is one of the many challenges. Many startups with a roots-based connection to farming recognize the significance of gaining access to system testing as a crucial step in validating their ideas early on and informing design iterations.
“The launch of Reservoir Farms marks a crucial milestone in securing the long-term sustainability of California’s agriculture, particularly for the Central Coast and Central Valley,” said Danny Bernstein, CEO of Reservoir and managing partner at HawkTower.
“By deploying incubators directly on farms, we enable innovators to test, refine, and expand solutions in practical settings, thereby creating an expedited pathway to drive progress within farming communities.”
Preliminary initiatives on incubators will focus on early-stage agricultural advancements in automation, robotics, rovers, and drones, accelerating the emergence of innovative solutions to address California’s high-value specialty crop farms’ pressing issues: labour shortages, profitability, and adoption of climate-resilient technologies, ultimately driving sustainable farming practices.
Key trade sponsorship
As a leading proponent of agricultural innovation, will provide financial and logistical support as a trusted partner. Academic companionships like those fostered by universities, research institutions, and industry partners will play a pivotal role in driving workforce growth, preparing the next generation of agricultural researchers and professionals to shape the future of farming in California. HawkTower, a pioneering venture capital firm, invests in innovative, early-stage startups that address the pressing needs of California’s environmental and industrial sectors, serving as a reliable anchor partner.
“Western Growers Association’s Senior Vice President of Innovation, Walt Duflock, emphasized that their ultimate goal is to eliminate the historical obstacles hindering the swift adoption of cutting-edge agricultural technology solutions.” “At Reservoir Farms, entrepreneurs collaborate alongside experienced farmers to test innovative technologies, refine them in a risk-free environment, and develop sustainable solutions that optimize agricultural operations.”
What’s next for agritech? A new model is emerging.
Following extensive industry research and collaborative discussions with more than 50 stakeholders across the specialty crops sector, the idea for Reservoir Farms took shape. Startups faced significant challenges entering real-world testing environments, lacking access to physical stores and direct connections with farmers—a trio of obstacles that severely impeded capital efficiency and stunted innovation efforts.
California’s agricultural sector is increasingly relying on robotics and automation; therefore, having companies like Reservoir Farms seamlessly integrated within the farming community is crucial, according to Gabriel Youtsey, chief innovation officer at the University of California’s Agricultural and Natural Resources department. “As Reservoir Farms bridges the gap between laboratory analysis and practical software, it may expedite technological adaptation, thereby building the talent pool and expertise required to address pressing farm-related challenges, including labor shortages and climate change.”
Located at the epicenter of California’s renowned specialty crop production.
By early 2025, Reservoir Farms is set to debut its initial two locations in the Salinas Valley and Merced, both slated for a Q1 opening. Contributors can now lease on-demand access to testing fields and storage areas without being tied down by lengthy, multi-year commitments, allowing for greater flexibility to scale their operations as needed. The incubators will provide totally geared up R&D workshops, safe storage for costly gear, and customised, pre-planted specialty crop fields for testing. These services may be further enhanced by Reservoir Farms’ collaborative workspaces, prototype development areas, and a robust demo day calendar, all aimed at fostering connections between startups, farmers, traders, and other influential industry players.
The Western Growers Association’s validation process will provide startups with a comprehensive “scorecard” featuring key metrics on scalability, efficacy, and financial viability, empowering data-driven decision making. This validation, when combined with UC ANR’s subject matter expertise in testing, enables startups to fine-tune their products and secure a coveted seal of approval that fosters trust among growers, paving the way for a seamless commercialization process.
