Initially, when I started freelancing on Upwork nine years ago, I set my rates extremely low just to experience the platform’s potential. What a transformation! Nobody expected me to go from being considered eccentric to earning over $50,000 within just two years, and yet, here I am, six years down the line, having achieved this remarkable feat.
In reality, chances are that one might assume I’m idealistically recounting my Upwork experience, but I assure you, that’s far from the truth. I aim to correct misinformation primarily, given the prevailing negativity surrounding Upwork and similar writing platforms. Despite the prevailing doubts, several aspiring writers continued to pursue their passion, with some of us heeding cautionary advice that certain platforms weren’t ideal starting points.
I’m hesitant about platforms that deduct 10 to 20 percent of my earnings, like the commission fees charged by Upwork to freelancers. While Upwork provides a valuable platform for writers like me to connect with clients seeking writing assistance, it also serves as a central hub where both parties can find each other and collaborate on projects.
For me, this alternative looks appealing?
I’m neutral towards the platform, neither enthusiastic nor overly critical.
After leveraging Upwork, I finally achieved profitability at a pace that was incredibly convenient, considering I had previously spent five months’ worth of wages without knowing how to monetize my skills until I discovered the art of writing for a living.
