On August, NASA’s Perseverance Rover successfully utilized its Mars Oxygen In-Situ Useful Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) module to produce oxygen for the 16th and final time, marking a significant milestone in the mission. 7, 2023. The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s microwave-sized system astonished its designers with its exceptional performance.
After NASA’s Perseverance rover successfully landed on Mars in February 2021, In February 2021, the MOXIE device produced approximately 122 grams of oxygen, equivalent to the amount a small dog would breathe in over a period of 10 hours, according to NASA. At its peak, the MOXIE system was capable of producing up to 12 grams of high-purity oxygen per hour, with concentrations consistently reaching 98% or above. NASA’s goal for the instrument was half that amount? On its final run, NASA’s MOXIE produced a significant 9.8 grams of oxygen.
The MOXIE device generates molecular oxygen through an electrochemical process that splits one oxygen atom from each molecule of carbon dioxide extracted from the thin Martian atmosphere. The movement of gases within the system is monitored to assess the purity and yield of oxygen generated.
As NASA’s Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment (MOXIE) continues to demonstrate its capabilities, units based on this cutting-edge technology will likely hold the key to successful future space missions. While astronauts may one day venture to Mars and require a reliable oxygen supply for breathing, it’s crucial to consider the multifaceted implications of such a necessity.
The applied sciences within MOXIE may serve as a source of rocket propellant, crucial for industrial applications launching rockets carrying astronauts back to their homes.
During its prolonged stay on Mars, MOXIE successfully completed all technical requirements and endured through an entire Martian year despite varying environmental conditions. On the planet’s dusty surface, the team successfully demonstrated its innovative oxygen-producing system for the first time ever.
