Are we perpetually seeking innovative strategies to uncover hidden costs and streamline our cloud expenditure? By leveraging Microsoft Cost Management, can we gain valuable insights into where our expenses are accruing, identify and rectify wasteful spending habits, and thereby unlock the potential to achieve more while minimizing waste?
Regardless of whether you’re a fledgling scholar, a burgeoning startup, or a well-established corporation, financial limitations are an unavoidable reality, necessitating a keen understanding of where funds are allocated and how to strategically plan for future growth. No one wants a surprise when they receive an invoice, which is where electronic invoicing comes in.
Are we consistently seeking innovative strategies to better understand our organizational hurdles and how Microsoft Cost Management can help identify and prevent wasteful expenditures, allowing us to achieve more with fewer resources? These updates may prove to be useful.
Azure OpenAI Service prices
As artificial intelligence adoption surges across sectors, businesses increasingly incorporate these technologies into the very fabric of their operations. As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly prevalent, it is crucial that our clients effectively manage their AI expenditures. (FinOps for AI).
In my previous article, I explored hourly pricing for Azure OpenAI provisioned throughput models (PTUs) and the introduction of 1-month and 1-year Azure OpenAI provisioned reservations. Here, I’ll cover the tools we offer to help you analyze, monitor, and optimize your Azure OpenAI costs. These instruments discussed below also apply to other Azure companies.
Analyze prices
While Price Book is a valuable tool for gaining insights into pricing, its true power lies in its customizable views, which enable users to group and filter data by various value attributes, thereby unlocking unparalleled levels of granularity and insight. You can view prices grouped by tags, useful resource teams, areas, and more; utilize filters to manage the designated attribute. The screenshot illustrates the adaptable views available in Value Evaluation.
Elevate your Azure OpenAI pricing exploration by leveraging familiar views, now optimized for seamless usage.

Service Tier/Meter subcategory: Azure OpenAI (or) Azure OpenAI Reservation
You may also utilize the “Useful resource Kind = OpenAI” filter; however, the view would not include reservation purchases made? The screenshot illustrates the “Accrued Prices” view in Value Evaluation, filtered as previously discussed and organized by meter. With grouping by meter, you gain visibility into distinct price tiers for token-based deployments and PTU-based deployments within a selected scope.
Monitor prices:
Several approaches exist to monitor prices effectively, preventing them from escalating out of control and staying within predetermined budget constraints. Here are two approaches available in value management:
:
Receiving email updates on your prices is a simple yet effective way to stay on top of them, allowing you to identify trends and anomalies that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. To stay updated on non-public or shared views in Value evaluation, simply click the “Subscribe” button at the top of your desired view. You can also invite team members to receive these updates daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on their needs and preferences.
:
To avoid surprise at the cost of goods and services while keeping group members responsible for their expenditures, creating a budget is crucial. When setting budgets, you receive notifications whenever actual or projected costs surpass the predetermined thresholds you’ve established. You can create a price range on your Azure OpenAI prices using the filters discussed above. By establishing budgets, organizations can trigger automated responses when spending thresholds are reached, enabling proactive measures such as invoking webhooks, opening tickets, and dispatching push notifications to the Azure mobile app, ensuring seamless alert management. Organizing budgets effectively can be straightforward and significantly reduce the likelihood of encountering various problems related to value overruns. You may learn more about price ranges by exploring both value evaluations and API experiences.

Optimize prices
Your value optimisation journey commences by determining the optimal framework for your Azure OpenAI implementations. Choose between two distinct fashion options: provisioned throughput models (PTUs) or conventional token-based deployments. You need to utilise the data to estimate prices for these fashion items primarily based on your predicted utilisation rates? For Production Traffic Unit (PTU) deployments, provisioning Azure OpenAI Service reservations can help you realize significant cost savings. You may opt for a commitment that spans either one month or one year in duration. While securing optimized rates via reservation purchases is a crucial first step, it’s equally essential to closely track and monitor the usage of these reservations to prevent unnecessary waste and maximize ROI. To effectively manage value, one must utilize the “Reservations + Hybrid Profit” feature within the platform’s analytics tool, which enables real-time monitoring of reservation utilization across all resources. As depicted in the screenshot below, optimizing settings can be accessed by navigating to the “Value Administration” section and clicking on the “Optimization” tab located on the left-hand side of the menu.
To ensure optimal performance, you can configure alerts that notify you whenever resource utilisation falls below a predetermined level, allowing you to seize opportunities promptly.
We anticipate that you’ll effectively utilize these tools to manage your expenses on the Azure OpenAI Service, as we previously explored their applicability across all Azure organizations.
