The Meta Quest Pro, a high-end augmented reality headset, is being discontinued just five months after its release.

Meta reportedly halts engagement on rival project, La Jolla. Development commenced in November of the preceding year, with a planned resumption at an unspecified point in 2027.

It seems that the situation has changed; however, further clarification is needed to understand the specifics of this development. The cancellation of the mission is reportedly attributed to the fact that the headset employed MicroOLED displays, a technology that proved prohibitively expensive, exceeding Meta’s initial goal of keeping the cost under $1,000?

Meta cancels its Apple Vision Pro competitor

The $3,500 Apple Intelligent Professional headset has failed to impress, and if even Apple can’t make a premium product a top seller, it’s likely that the market demand for high-end headsets is limited enough to accommodate only one competitor.

According to information regarding the cancellation of the La Jolla headset, Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth stated: “We currently have numerous prototypes in various stages of refinement.” We don’t manufacture everything we produce. We propel forward with some, while leaving others behind. Omitting singular anecdotes to present an accurate representation is essential, as isolated instances rarely provide a comprehensive understanding.

While the premium Quest headset was reportedly cancelled, Meta continues to develop an affordable alternative, code-named Ventura, which is expected to launch by year’s end. Meta is poised to unveil its latest AR glasses by next month, with the Quest 4 VR headset expected to debut in 2026.
