From May 5 to 10, 2024, we crisscross our city daily, cameras in hand, capturing the arrival of the Olympic Flame in Marseille through vivid photographs. Here’s your daily journal with some useful information.
Considering everything except May 7th, and since all our photos are thus taken from the ground or at sea.
Don’t panic! In our automotive wrap-up at the end of this journal, we’ve curated a selection of five videos featuring stunning drone footage. We’ve condensed them into one magnificent video and launched a dedicated webpage. Three episodes have already been produced, with a fourth in preparation – and it’s going to be even more breathtaking!
Marseille, bien sûr !
Tonight, experience an innovative creation by the choreographer of Compagnie Dernière Minute at 7:30 PM at Stade Delort, situated adjacent to the massive Orange Velodrome Stadium. Approximately 150 cyclists gathered to accompany the Olympic flame’s journey to Marseille. As this visually striking and inherently visual ballet demanded to be captured by a drone’s lens. Indeed, the ballet echoes murmurations, those flocks of birds in the sky. As pedestrians converge and intersect, they create intricate patterns, sometimes forming geometric shapes or even the shape of an eight.
As the drone was prohibited during the show and for the two days of the Olympic torch relay in Marseille, we performed this evening on May 7th. Voici quelques photographs du tournage. Aerial photos will aid in preparing this spectacle?
The Olympic flame continues its journey through Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, bringing relative calm to Marseille once more. The historic Le Belém is open until Sunday, May 12th, located at Quai J4. For those who’ve secured an online ticket with a scheduled visit time to be respected (closed reservations), and another for the careless and very enthusiastic who wish to board this legendary three-master ship!
Arrows indicate the direction of visitation, friendly and approachable sailors, as well as informative panels along the entire length of the route. You’re left to discover, and perhaps tempted to go with these few photographs. From the deck of Belém and its rigging, the view with the Main and Vigie Sainte-Marie towers on the Giant Breakwater is distinctly memorable. On a adoré!
Today, the Olympic flame took a tour around Marseille. As we approach the finish line between Périer and Le Prado, accompanied by a torchbearer who has been with us since April within the context of this. Loïc Danest is part of a collective of passionate individuals, and we accompanied him and his group to the velodrome stadium. The avenue du Prado and the Stade’s stairs were bustling with people, but in no way comparable to the crowd that thronged Vieux-Port yesterday. Fortunately, the automotive procession was easily followed in a peaceful atmosphere, with the kind permission of the police, gendarmes, and organizers. Merci à eux!
A wild world on the Old Port (230,000 people, including us!) as we attempt to catch a glimpse of the Belem making its entrance into the Old Port, greeted by the Alpha jets of the French Patrolling Squadron performing aerial acrobatics above the Marseilles skies, just before Soprano’s live performance! Enveloped in an extraordinary light: a grey sky and sun, accompanied by a gentle rain and a stunning rainbow. Magique !
The lack of probability prevented us from accessing the SNM pontoons, and even less so the Pharos. Control measures have significantly hindered our progress, and the densely packed crowd has blocked pedestrian traffic for a good hour. Finally, we settled for the spot in front of the ferry boat embarkation point, famous for connecting the Place aux Huils to the Central City Hall of Marseille. Amidst the Marseille-born and bred, we took a few casual photographs without pretensions. Fortunately, we had participated in the morning’s parade of 1024 boats at sea.
This morning we set sail from the Port of Estaque and joined 1024 authorized boats following the Belem yacht on its arrival in Marseille, with the Olympic Flame on board, which will be disembarked this evening at the Old Port.
It was a truly immense moment of intense emotions and powerful feelings. An atmosphere of revelry and fervor. Numerous vessels of all sorts, including grand and majestic sailing ships like the enormous La Belle Poule.
Voici quelques-une de nos photographs. The videos will be edited later, but you can see some clips on our site?
After a widely acclaimed first performance, the Groupe F returns with this fantastic fireworks display and its 800 drones that took to the sky from the giant’s dig at GPMM, forming a multitude of mobile figures above the sea, despite the rain and a sustained mistral gust of 40 km/h!
Thank you and bravo to them, a quintessential Marseilles’ touch on the automotive memory of us, we had never seen such a beautiful sight in the skies above Phocaea!
Here are some photos taken from there where we were very numerous!
Tomorrow morning, we will be at sea on a boat, among the 1024 vessels accompanying the Belem and Olympic flame into the bay of Marseille. As the sun sets over the historic Vieux-Port, we meticulously planned our evening’s majestic entrance to ensure a breathtaking view without being overwhelmed by the crowd. Below, we present the optimal vantage points in photographs. Considering the time of day, rentals will likely be quite expensive around 7 pm tomorrow. It’s better to arrive and hold your spot by 3:15-4:00 pm!
Here is the improved/revised text:
Actually, you have all day to watch the Belem sail along the length of the Marseille coast. You are given the opportunity to read this article for your pleasure.
As a notice indicates today, the quays in front of Fort Saint-Jean are closed to visitors. Qu’en sera-t-il demain? If allowed, it’s a fantastic spot to see the Belem up close, but I’m sure there will be a lot of people!
Here are a few recommended docking locations for the Belem’s arrival.
At the 240 Avenue level. Located in Vaudoyer, Marseille, and near the Église Saint-Laurent, there are three free-access panoramic terraces (photos 2-5) situated at three distinct levels.
From the unique vantage point of 44 Rue Caisserie, 13002 Marseille (#6), this shot offers a fresh and original perspective on the Vieux-Port and Notre-Dame de la Garde. What a thrilling prospect to imagine tomorrow with the Belem in this setting!
A confidential location you’re about to get: Located at 1 Quai Marcel Pagnol, 13007 Marseille, with the hope that accessibility is feasible. Rocky shores teeming with numerous locations right at water’s edge!
From the vantage point of the Good Mother’s Hill, even at a distance that may not quite meet our expectations.
Finally, the most beautiful spot remains for us at the Palais du Pharo.
Tonight, the Group F reprises its breathtaking show with 800 drones and an elegant fireworks display from 9:30 PM to 10 PM at the Giant’s Causeway viewing area. It’s bound to be a wild world. The entire point is to know where to position yourself to see it well!
If you want to be up close and personal with the action, head straight to the Robert-Laffont Promenade or catch Patrick Fiori’s live performance at 8pm.
If you want to take in the show from a bit of an elevated vantage point and distance yourself from the crowds, we’ve got just the spot for you.
- , 13002 Marseille, at the foot of the Old Port.
- , 13002 Marseille (ascend slightly towards the Église Saint-Laurent)
- To fully appreciate the breathtaking view of the city’s sunset, why not take a moment to linger over the prospect?
After passing through the Old Port, we arrived at the Île aux Charrettiers, which is still accessible today and tomorrow. Here are some incredible photographs of this magnificent ship, with Marseille and the Cathedral of Notre Dame in the backdrop! A truly priceless free visit!
Today, the Old Port is abuzz with energy. As we witnessed the colossal preparations nearing completion and the substantial presence of law enforcement forces, both on land and at sea. The breathtaking scene of the May 8th live performance is an incredible feat of automotive engineering – it’s literally floating on water! The floating pontoon is expected to moor the Belem tomorrow evening around 7 pm – an incredible sight. Des feux d’artifices sont prévus. Cela promet un spectacle hallucinant.
A few rare tales of fishermen are scattered here, lost amidst the crowd and equipment spread out.
We visited the Pharo Palace, envisioning the Belém entering the Old Port on Wednesday, May 8th around 5pm. We were able to identify some prime locations to ensure a great visibility of the event. We’re counting down to being there, hoping the weather will be favorable for this historic event in Marseille!
This Sunday, we witnessed a significant presence of Zodiac forces and law enforcement agencies conducting surveillance and controls in the Mediterranean waters, as well as at the Old Port, where an intense activity was unfolding from our vantage point atop the Pharo landmark.
dédiées à Marseille !
