The Mail app is about to receive its most significant overhaul yet, stepping into the limelight alongside the newly introduced Spotlight feature. Here’s everything that’s new.
The new Mail app seems entirely too much like Messages?
Upon launching Apple’s Mail app on iOS 18.2, the revamped design becomes strikingly apparent at first glance? Your mailbox’s display screen remains unchanged overall; nonetheless, upon opening an inbox, you’ll discover significant updates.
Apple has introduced a design focus on contact photos within the inbox, visually highlighting senders. What was once a sea of plain text is now a vibrant tapestry of colour and visual intrigue. Principally, emails in your inbox closely resemble threads within the Messages app, featuring a contact’s profile picture on the left side.
This alignment seamlessly complements Apple’s innovative approach to corporate initiatives. An enterprise can now add its logo to be used as a contact photo, not only in Mail but also in the Phone app, and within the Apple Pay interface during contactless transactions. When an enterprise has not implemented its own icons, those from Apple Maps are used instead.
Classes introduce significant refinements to the way you manage your inbox.
iOS 18.2 introduces a significant enhancement to the inbox experience, surpassing the significance of adding contact photos.
Apple Mail’s sophisticated algorithm effectively categorizes your inbox into four distinct categories. Below are their titles and descriptions.
- Discover what truly matters to your audience in Main, and relegate all other aspects to secondary importance.
- Track all orders, along with transportation and supply notifications, grouped by sender.
- Stay current with timely updates for each area, accompanied by informative newsletters and customizable alerts.
- Stay informed about the latest developments and announcements from companies and organizations that align with your interests and goals.
Emails are typically categorized upon receipt, with each folder logically grouped into two primary categories: ‘New Messages’ for incoming correspondence and ‘Older Messages’ for archived communications.
You can optionally customize the Mail app’s notification badge by setting its behavior to simply reflect the number of new unread messages in your inbox, or retain the previous default count for all messages.
While some athletes might find value in a personalized coaching program, others may choose to bypass the system and forge their own path.
Can you move conversations to a different category or folder? Yes, by making some simple adjustments! By allowing a sender to automatically forward messages to a specific group or contacts, users can customize their messaging experience and avoid relying on Apple’s default system.
Here’s good news: if you’re not thrilled with the new class system, you have two options to restore your original unified inbox.
- By default, the Mail app primarily displays four predefined classes. There’s an often-overlooked ‘All Mail’ view waiting to be discovered. Regardless of the inbox class you’re viewing, you can seamlessly transition to the ‘All Mail’ view by swiping left.
- To opt out of classes entirely, simply tap the three dots in the top-right corner and toggle from Classes to Record View instead. Will reset your iPhone’s email inbox organization settings to their previous configuration prior to iOS 18.2.
To streamline communication, many social media platforms offer a feature called the Digest view. This condensed format displays all unread conversations at once, allowing users to quickly scan and respond to multiple messages with ease.
When you click on the Digest view, you’ll typically see a list of threads or topics, along with relevant details like sender names and timestamps.
Notably, a further significant alteration manifests in your email inbox’s dynamics.
While the ‘All Mail’ view displays individual messages, four newly introduced categories in the Mail app aim to further simplify your inbox organization.
By aggregating messages from the same sender, they provide a convenient ‘Digest view’, as illustrated above. However, like many other features in iOS 18.2, the option to enable these habits can be easily disabled whenever you prefer.

While Mail remains one of the most widely used iPhone apps, its development has historically been relatively stagnant under Apple’s oversight. While iOS 18.2’s redesign efforts may have altered certain aspects.
While I’ve thoroughly enjoyed experimenting with the revamped Mail app in iOS 18.2 beta, it’s equally reassuring to know that Apple has provided tools to undo recent changes should they not prove suitable. As the revamped Mail app is now available on iPhone, it’s reasonable to expect similar updates for iPad and Mac devices as well.
