Establishing the Coalition for Safe Artificial Intelligence (CoSAI): A Groundbreaking Initiative

Today, I’m thrilled to announce the launch of. The Coalition for Safe Artificial Intelligence (CoSAI) is a collaborative endeavour comprising trade leaders, researchers, and builders united in their mission to significantly enhance the safety of AI deployments. As a professional services organization operating under the umbrella of OASIS Open, CoSAI is driven by the mission to promote global collaboration, innovation, and efficiency through open-source technologies.

The founding members of CoSAI comprise trade leaders from OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, Cisco, Cohere, GenLab, Google, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia, and PayPal, aligning with the organization’s mission to foster collaboration and innovation in the field. Our shared goal is to craft a future where cutting-edge expertise is not only advanced but also inherently secure by design.

CoSAI optimizes existing AI investments by focusing on secure AI implementation strategies for organizations of all sizes, from inception to maturity. Through collaborations with organizations like NIST, Open-Supply Safety Foundation (OpenSSF), and other key stakeholders, CoSAI engages in collective AI safety assessment, fosters best practice sharing, and co-develops open-source projects.

CoSAI’s remit encompasses the secure development, deployment, and operation of AI systems designed to mitigate the unique risks associated with AI, including model manipulation, theft, information poisoning, immediate injection, and confidentiality breaches. By providing practitioners with intuitive, built-in safety features, we can empower them to harness the full potential of cutting-edge AI technologies without requiring extensive expertise in AI safety protocols.

The CoSAI initiative aims to partner with various organizations that drive advancements in responsible and secure artificial intelligence (AI), alongside esteemed entities such as industry leaders, research institutions, and regulatory bodies. Members, akin to Google, could potentially contribute their current work through thought leadership, comprehensive analysis, best practices, innovative initiatives, and open-source tools to strengthen the partner ecosystem.

The securing of artificial intelligence remains a disjointed endeavor, with creators, deployers, and end-users often struggling to navigate disparate and isolated best practices. Assessing and mitigating AI-specific dangers without clear guidelines and standardized methods is a significant challenge, even for the most experienced organizations.

Safety demands coordinated effort; safeguarding AI effectively begins with AI itself? To ensure a secure participation in the digital environment, all stakeholders – individuals, developers, and businesses – must adopt rigorous safety protocols and best practices across the board. AI is not any exception.

The core objectives of CoSAI are to establish a robust and resilient infrastructure, foster collaboration among members, drive innovation through research and development, promote education and training, and ensure regulatory compliance.

The Centre for the Study of the Assurance of Innovation (CoSAI) will collaborate with industry, academia, and government stakeholders to address critical artificial intelligence (AI) safety concerns and develop innovative solutions. Our initial efforts encompass AI-powered and software-centric supply chain security initiatives, preparing defenders to confront the evolving cyber landscape.

CoSAI’s diverse stakeholder base comprising key technology companies invests in AI safety assessments, exchanges safety expertise, and develops open-source technical tools and best practices to facilitate the responsible development and deployment of AI systems.

To foster a more secure AI environment, CoSAI is driving innovation by building trust in AI technologies and ensuring the seamless integration of these advancements across all industries. The risks associated with artificial intelligence’s evolution are complex and rapidly shifting. The coalition of expert leaders, comprising esteemed professionals from various fields, is poised to have a profound impact on elevating the security standards of AI deployments.
