
The reorganization under a new holding company could signal the dawn of exciting opportunities for each of Google’s subsidiary brands. By 2017, Google is poised to launch its drone-based delivery service, with Chief David Vos announcing the company’s ambitious plan to make it a reality.
The corporation is reportedly in discussions with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Department of Transportation (DoT) to develop a drone registration and airspace management system, which could facilitate safer large-scale aerial operations. The system is designed to utilize mobile and web technologies to manage flight operations at altitudes below 500 feet (152 meters). Drones flying above a certain altitude may soon need to be registered with the Department of Transportation (DoT), with potential enforcement starting before the end of the year.
Venture Wing, a division of Google X’s research team, relaunched in August 2014, having spent two years prior developing the technology. At a recent event in Australia, Venture Wing unveiled a large-scale prototype drone, but insiders suggest that cutting-edge innovations are already in development.
Sky-based parcel transport has been a recurring topic in recent years? Amazon revealed its ambitious plan to launch a fleet of flying drones for package delivery in 2013. Companies are also poised to launch similar drone-based initiatives, but these won’t lift off until regulations surrounding commercial drones are settled and publicly announced. It is anticipated that this will happen at some point in early 2016.
While regulatory and technical barriers remain to be overcome, drone-delivered packages may still arrive at your doorstep in the near future.
