Developers and builders are at the forefront of Amazon Web Services (AWS). As Amazon’s Chief Technology Officer, a key aspect of my role is engaging with developers worldwide to gain insight into the unique obstacles they’re facing while building on AWS, allowing me to better understand their needs and optimize our services accordingly?

Recently, I embarked on a journey to Southeast Asia to delve into the region’s burgeoning building traditions. Among the numerous international destinations I’ve had the pleasure of visiting was Malaysia, ranking 34th globally in terms of its thriving experience sector, where enterprising individuals, business owners, and a dynamic community of innovators are successfully validating the notion that addressing complex human challenges can indeed be a profitable entrepreneurial model.

Tech for good

Catastrophe reduction is undoubtedly an area where expertise has the potential to make a profound impact on saving lives. When catastrophes strike, whether natural or human-induced, every moment matters, and having the right tools and strategies at hand can significantly impact outcomes. In the event of natural disasters or other crises, the convergence of laptop vision, machine learning, and cloud technologies, when combined with drones, environmental sensors, and other hardware advancements, has the potential to significantly streamline catastrophe response, enhance communication and coordination, and provide real-time information and insights that inform rescue efforts and support distribution.

During my expedition, I had the opportunity to engage with DroneTech, a pioneering Malaysian company specialising in drone solutions, whose origins date back to the provision of high-quality aerial mapping data and visual content. Following catastrophic floods that ravaged the region in 2014, the corporation seized an opportunity to leverage its drone capabilities in support of critical search and rescue efforts. Utilizing advanced technology, they dispatched their fleet of drones to meticulously chart water currents and gather valuable data, ultimately informing the development of crucial evacuation corridors and precise rescue trajectories. The pivot demonstrated the corporate’s forward-thinking capabilities, potentially generating a profoundly positive impact during times of crisis?

Werner Vogels at Aerodyne

By capitalizing on the capabilities of their drone technology, Aerodyne has been able to uncover innovative applications for their data platform, ultimately driving sustainable advancements. Currently, the corporation is focused on addressing complex industrial issues. By leveraging its proprietary DRONOS software platform deployed on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Aerodyne enables the mechanical analysis of vast datasets of aerial information using machine learning, thereby delivering critical insights. Farmers’ ability to swiftly identify issues such as crop disease or inadequate irrigation enables them to respond promptly, resulting in a significant yield boost of up to 67%. Aerodyne leverages drones to efficiently inspect and map mobile towers for telecommunications companies, thereby expediting the rollout of 5G services by a staggering 90% while significantly reducing operational costs.

As the application of drones for mapping evolved, so too did their potential to tackle complex issues in food safety, disaster response, connectivity, and energy security, transforming them from mere tools into powerful solutions. An organisation with a noble purpose can thrive sustainably by continually innovating ways to make a positive impact.

A crucible for innovation

In Southeast Asia, a common theme emerges: rather than focusing solely on transforming into the next big thing, the priority is on addressing pressing local concerns that directly impact community members. Firms are revolutionising access to financial services, opening up credit opportunities for underprivileged communities, and steadfastly prioritising educational resources for learners of all ages.

Despite numerous visits, I remain struck by the region’s burgeoning expertise sector and its vibrant pursuit of making a positive impact. Throughout Malaysia’s building history, the tireless efforts of its construction professionals, both past and present, have been truly awe-inspiring in their pursuit of innovative solutions and timely problem-solving. I am delighted by your steady advancement.

Now, go construct!
