Drone Flights Historic Landmarks Scotland

Drones are now offered as an innovative way to soar above some of Scotland’s most celebrated historical monuments. Historic Environment Scotland (HES) now offers a cutting-edge platform allowing drone pilots to secure flight permissions for more than 200 sites, including Stirling Citadel, childhood home of Mary Queen of Scots, in its vast portfolio. With this breakthrough development, enthusiasts and experts can now capture unparalleled aerial footage of iconic landmarks such as legendary castles, majestic cathedrals, and historic stately homes, offering an experience that is truly once-in-a-lifetime.

Introducing a Revolutionary Online Training Experience for Drone Pilots: The Future of Aerial Education

Historically, obtaining approval for drone operations required a straightforward process on the Historic Environment Scotland website, involving requests to take off and land at one of their numerous properties. Noteworthy attractions in Scotland include the historically significant castles of Edinburgh Citadel, Blackness Citadel, and Doune Citadel, each offering a glimpse into the country’s rich cultural heritage. As drone technology has advanced and become increasingly sophisticated, demand for processing these requests has surged, outpacing the original system’s capacity to effectively manage them.

With the launch of Altitude Angel’s innovative platform, drone pilots can now seamlessly apply for permission to fly at iconic sites through either the UK’s premier drone flight planning app, DroneHelp, or via dronesafetymap.com. The platform enables Historic Atmosphere Scotland to efficiently manage flight requests, allowing for adaptability in approving or declining events, or recommending alternative flight schedules based on venue availability, operating hours, and other concurrent occurrences.

Paul Spence, Senior Filming and Pictures Supervisor at HES, emphasized the significance of this platform: “The ability to utilize drones across our properties, providing operators with a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ opportunity to film historic and iconic areas and landmarks, is something we’re exceptionally proud to be spearheading.”

First Websites Now Accepting Purposes

The core websites to explore within the platform include Tantallon Citadel, Caerlaverock Citadel, and Huntly Citadel, with additional properties scheduled for development in subsequent phases. With the aim of preserving Scotland’s rich cultural heritage through aerial documentation, drone operators are invited to submit their flight proposals for approval by Historic Environment Scotland (HES) via a simplified application process.

By capturing breathtaking aerial footage, drones enable us to reimagine familiar landscapes from a fresh, all-encompassing vantage point, unlocking unprecedented vistas of our online presence. As the veil lifts, the meticulous craftsmanship behind these treasures becomes breathtakingly evident, revealing the truly remarkable beauty within their intricate forms.

Preserving History: A Crucial Task for Drone Pilots and Heritage Sites

The launch of this innovative platform marks a significant milestone for both drone operators and heritage websites across Scotland. Through a partnership with Altitude Angel’s Approval Providers, this endeavour ensures the most effective presentation of iconic historical sites via aerial cinematography.

As Chris Forster, Chief Operations Officer of Altitude Angel, expressed his excitement: “Reaching this major milestone – enabling drone flights at iconic sites like Scotland’s Stirling and Edinburgh Castles, as well as various websites and venues, through our Approval Providers platform – is a significant achievement for both Altitude Angel and the UK drone operator community.” Scotland boasts a rich tapestry of stunning and iconic architectural treasures amidst breathtaking landscapes. By empowering the creation of online platforms that showcase films, we’re thrilled to have played a role in bringing such an innovative concept to fruition – allowing users to access these resources at a time and location that suits their needs.

The innovative system provides not only a unique opportunity for drone pilots to capture footage of Scotland’s most revered sites, but also enables Historic Environment Scotland to safeguard the integrity and security of these national treasures, thereby preserving their cultural significance for future generations.
