Don’t waste your money on a shiny new floor laptop just to run console game emulators.

Can a laptop equipped with PC gaming software and a compatible controller successfully emulate traditional console video games? While that’s a seemingly straightforward query at first glance, its durability stems from the fact that most emulation software programs are designed to translate vintage console code into a format executable on Intel and AMD-based processors. To successfully execute the emulator on a device featuring an ARM processor, such as the Snapdragon X Elite, you’ll require alternative phrasing that accurately replicates its functionality. While emulating Microsoft’s Prism emulator appears to have some limitations, it also serves as a useful test for discovering its boundaries and capabilities?

Starting with RetroArch, the go-to choice for retro gamers seeking to revive classic titles from obsolete consoles and handhelds. I fondly recall my childhood on classic Nintendo systems, but unfortunately, my experiences with Muppet-SNES emulator were marred by frequent crashes following every load screen. The ParaLLEI emulator effortlessly powered a few of my N64 gaming attempts, with its smooth performance rivaling that of BSNES and SNES9x, which similarly handled 80s retro classics with ease. So it appears that issues function adequately for the most part, with the exception of any potential discomfort. However, it’s truly remarkable when you’ll be able to play classic video games on a device as small and affordable as a Raspberry Pi. I ran rigorous tests using the latest emulators focused on powerful console architectures from the late 2000s.

While Snapdragon PCs do offer impressive emulation capabilities for retro gaming, they’re hardly the only option on the market – even budget-friendly alternatives like the Raspberry Pi can deliver surprisingly authentic gameplay experiences.

When running PCSX2’s PlayStation 2 emulation on Gran Turismo 4 and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eternity, the performance was remarkably smooth and impressive when utilizing DirectX 11 and 12 features. Vulkan’s performance, however, is marred by frequent crashes in various video games, a circumstance that is decidedly surprising. Notwithstanding this, I was still able to achieve a relatively smooth frame rate of around 60fps, despite the occasional minor slowdown experienced during Gran Turismo gameplay when 4x rendering was activated. While generally not hazardous, the PlayStation 2 era has become remarkably compatible with even humble hardware like a modern potato. Despite the lack of official support, gamers who have backed up a collection of PlayStation 2 classics can still find solace in knowing that they’ll be able to play most of these retro titles on their Copilot Plus PC without any issues.

Regrettably, the initial test proved unsuccessful; my Xbox 360-based setup for Xenia refused to configure properly. I initially encountered a notification stating that this Arm-based processor lacks support for the necessary AVX instruction, with no option for emulation to compensate. Bummer. Despite the absence of advanced SIMD features like AVX on x64 processors, the gap is understandable given the fundamental differences between architectures, including the lack of support for Xenia setup. Despite this, Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer is unlikely to be fully completed.

While subsequent up with impressive renditions like RPCS3’s PlayStation 3 emulation, unfortunately, this excellence ceases once you venture beyond this milestone. Initially, video game playback was impossible, requiring trial-and-error adjustments to the emulator’s decoder settings before a title would even launch. As the hours-long compilation process finally yielded results, my excitement was tempered by the discovery that even the most basic in-game menus were struggling to maintain a smooth 30 frames per second, let alone render actual gameplay. A 3D object suddenly materialized, prompting the emulator to crash back to the desktop – a scenario observed even when playing titles deemed “playable” by the RPCS3 wiki. Unfortunately, these cutting-edge x64 emulators fall short of providing adequate security to successfully emulate PS3 games on Arm architecture.

Prior to abandoning my emulation endeavors, a recollection of Dolphin’s Arm64 build for Windows flashed into my mind – the popular Gamecube and Wii emulator that has long been a staple in the emulation community. I’m delighted to report that Dolphin seamlessly launches video games with impressive results. DirectX11’s efficiency was marred by occasional stuttering issues, whereas Wind Waker and Mario Galaxy 2 performed almost seamlessly under the Vulkan rendering engine. While the Snapdragon X Elite’s GPU might not be the most powerful in the PC realm, it’s still sufficient to handle many of the greatest Nintendo games ever created.

The recurring issue of a dearth in native Arm-based software persists again. Cutting-edge emulators are a non-starter.

There’s no need for further assessments here. While Arm-based Copilot PCs may not be capable of handling the most demanding emulators, they are more than sufficient to run platforms focusing on 20-year-old games, even if these titles were originally compiled for x64 architecture. Without the hefty price tag of a high-end gaming PC, you’ll still enjoy an array of classic Nintendo titles alongside numerous other video games at your fingertips. Despite recreation emulation being an unappealing reason to buy one, this experiment serves as a stark reminder of the problems arising from the scarcity of native Arm-based software. However, this lackluster performance falls flat in the broader context of emulation’s vast potential.
