At CES 2023, Uber unveiled a landmark, multi-year alliance with Delta Air Lines, enabling SkyMiles members to accumulate mileage rewards when traveling with Uber or ordering food through Uber Eats within the United States.
The strategic partnership is slated to debut this spring, offering Uber users access to enhanced features such as streamlined pickup and drop-off experiences at Delta airports. An Uber representative declined further comment when asked for clarification on the matter.
Uber is sweetening the deal for its loyal customers by offering one SkyMile per dollar spent on orders exceeding $40 through Uber Eats, as well as on UberX rides to or from the airport when linked to a Delta Skymiles membership. Riders who opt for premium services, such as UberBlack or UberConsolidated, can earn 2 miles per dollar spent on their trips. For early-booked riders, each dollar invested yields a reward of three miles.
The potential partnership between Delta, Uber, and Joby Aviation could be a key component in their ongoing collaboration. Delta’s collaboration with Joby suggests that Delta prospects will ultimately gain access to this feature.
Uber’s partnership with Joby is particularly noteworthy. Uber’s City Air Mobility (CAM) unit was launched in 2020. As a condition of the agreement, the companies were required to integrate their respective platforms, enabling a more streamlined experience by allowing users to seamlessly transition from ground-based travel arrangements to in-flight bookings within each other’s apps. What emerges from this partnership ensures seamless, on-demand mobility, much like ordering an Uber ride at a moment’s notice.
In late October, industry leaders discussed a shared vision for connected mobility, just short of formalizing a comprehensive, three-party collaboration.
Although Joby, supported by Uber and Delta, must still obtain the necessary certifications to operate an electric air taxi service, it faces numerous challenges in its pursuit of regulatory approval.
Representatives from ride-hailing giant Uber, startup Joby, and airline industry leader Delta have opted not to disclose any updates or potential collaborations in a rumored partnership that may soon become reality.
