How the Internet of Things (IoT) is Revolutionizing Industries Through Data-Driven Insights?

Adele Each, Cisco Managing Director

As you enter the room, you’re met with an uncanny vision of what a tech-savvy individual looks like – a vivid mental image that’s as clear as glass. Imagine the shockwaves coursing through you as the veil lifts to reveal the authentic countenances of technology’s true nature: a tapestry woven from countless threads of familiarity, resonating deeply with your own experiences.

Recently, in the northwestern United Kingdom, near Liverpool, Cisco and its partner Virgin Media O2, a leading telecommunications provider, collaborated to challenge conventional wisdom and pave the way for a new era. Hosted by a registered UK-based non-governmental organization, the event sought to demystify the technology industry for young adults aged 18-22, who often struggle to stay abreast of rapidly evolving tech trends and innovations. This expert guidance aimed to broaden perspectives by showcasing the vast opportunities within the tech industry, thereby dispelling misconceptions and inspiring innovation.

The day began with an intriguing and captivating challenge. The members were then subdivided into smaller groups and challenged to create visual representations of individuals thriving within the tech industry. Fascinatingly, this pervasive outcome often manifested as a clichéd portrait of a middle-aged Caucasian male donning spectacles, immaculately attired, and clutching a worn leather case. The teams were tasked with considering additional details regarding the technology professional – information such as what vehicle they drove, where they lived, their hobbies, and vacation destinations, etc.

To challenge and dismantle these stereotypes, we were asked by the organizers to reveal our individual identities as women volunteers. As we rose to our feet, we were confronted with a sea of incredulous expressions, for the young adults gazing across the room had just formed an unflattering impression of the people standing before them, one that bore little resemblance to their preconceived notion.

As a result, we facilitated an engaging conversation where Cisco and Virgin Media O2 volunteers exchanged insights into their respective roles and professional journeys, offering a diverse and nuanced perspective on the technology industry.

The remainder of the day was devoted to supporting members in their professional pursuits, meticulously reviewing their LinkedIn profiles and providing actionable guidance on how to effectively utilize online networking platforms. Younger adults gained valuable insights by reversing roles at an interactive panel, interviewing volunteers and fielding challenging questions that fostered a deeper understanding of the interview process.

Afterwards, we deployed them to the Cisco Networking Academy (NetAcad), a leading online platform offering comprehensive programs and certifications designed to develop and enhance technical skills, and investigated which courses they could participate in.

As we brought together two industry giants, a sense of excitement filled the air, making previously inaccessible tech career paths suddenly feel within reach for our members; the electricity in the room was electric, inspiring many to take the first step towards a new career in technology.

One of the most uplifting experiences occurred when learning about individuals who, prior to their involvement with Merseyside Neighborhood Coaching (now Spark), had successfully transitioned into new careers during analogous periods.

  • A young professional pivoted from his development background into a career in technology by enrolling in Cisco’s NetAcad program. Currently serving as a community engineer, he played a key role in organizing the local community for the prestigious Open Championship golf event held in Liverpool.
  • One standout tale revolved around a young entrepreneur, a mother of her own, who pioneered an innovative automotive design firm, specialising in bespoke wraps for cars and motorcycles. Intrigued by the training session, she subsequently enrolled in the Cisco NetAcad program to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively digitize her company’s entry point.
  • When a Virgin Media O2 volunteer joined forces with Merseyside Neighborhood Coaching, which has since evolved into Spark, one individual was so inspired by their remarkable efforts that she’s taken her enthusiasm to the next level: now serving on their non-executive board to support and amplify the profound impact they’re making.

Their transformative odysseys serve as a testament to the vast possibilities born from deciphering the complexities of the digital realm.

The joint endeavors of Cisco, Virgin Media O2, and Merseyside Neighborhood Coaching (since rebranded as Spark) had a profound impact, expanding horizons and inspiring them to envision a boundless future.
