The DC Universe is getting a new addition: a puppet-animated film featuring two Robins. According to sources, the movie will bring together Dick Grayson and Tim Drake in a unique adventure that combines humor, action, and heart.

Here’s how it could play out: The studio has officially greenlit a film that serves as an origin story for both Robin and Jason Todd, who will both evolve into the iconic superhero, told through the unique lens of puppet animation.

The film will delve into the formative years of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, a.k.a., the Robins. It’s worth noting that when fans think of the “Dynamic Duo,” they typically envision Batman and Robin, not two separate Robins. We anticipate a solitary Robin and a singular Batman. We’ll see how, or if, that performs in practice?

Gunn publicly announced the venture through a posting on his social media platform.

We’re intrigued by this prospect but remain puzzled about the key concerns. Puppet animation typically features two-dimensional or three-dimensional characters created from various materials such as fabric, foam, or wood. The film is being produced by Swaybox, a company whose approach draws comparisons with acclaimed animation studio Laika. Within the realm of DC’s iconic metaverse, a certain je ne sais quoi aesthetic piques our interest. Deadlines describe the film as a unique blend of computer-generated imagery (CGI), strategically integrated stop-motion elements, and seamless live-action execution. The results’ long-form storytelling promises a visually stunning, dynamically expressive, and inherently human experience.

Written by Matthew Aldrich, and potentially directed by Arthur Mintz, a co-founder of Swaybox alongside Theresa Andersson. DC Studios’ CEOs Gunn and Safran, along with producer Matt Reeves, the director of

“I’ve longed to collaborate with Arthur and Swaybox on a film project, specifically a unique and captivating Batman and Robin narrative tailored for families – it’s a cherished aspiration,” Reeves said in an exclusive interview with the entertainment industry. Regardless of Keanu Reeves’ personal preferences, the film will not be connected to his existing cinematic universe. While potentially serving as a genesis tale for the broader DC Universe or fitting seamlessly within its Elseworlds umbrella, the uncertainty surrounding this project’s scope currently remains ambiguous. Upon being asked to pinpoint the movie’s place within the franchise, a source close to the production site confirmed that it is not set within the same universe as Keanu Reeves’.

That is fascinating although, proper? The DC Universe gets rebooted with a dynamic, action-packed animated gift from Gunn and Safran. The DC Extended Universe’s creative trajectory is a puzzle: a Superman film, an inexperienced Green Lantern presentation, a Supergirl movie, and potentially a Robin origin story featuring puppets? It’s refreshing that this isn’t a typical Marvel production; we’re pleased to see something new.
