As we deliberated on the types of events we wanted to host, we decided it would be exciting to feature diverse characters – not just for the matters at hand, but also for the dramatic tension we desired to create among them. The core four individuals, comprised of Miguel, Robbie, Tori, and Sam, consistently proved themselves to be reliable performers. We wanted to experiment with the captain dynamics and other related elements to inject an extra layer of tension into the story. Moments arose in the author’s quarters where we discussed scenarios that initially didn’t involve a 4, yet potentially ended with one, or perhaps not at all. Our deliberations spanned a wide range of topics.
While attending to episode 4’s captivating narrative, it’s truly enjoyable to focus on the unique personalities of characters like Demetri, Hawk, and Anthony – the Devons, Kennys, and their ilk – each with a certain quality that makes them stand out, whether driven by personal motivations or martial arts aspirations. It was invigorating to design a novel type of rivals that diverged from their previous experiences. When all was said and done, we initially considered the possibility that Hawk would not be included in the plan; however, a subsequent opportunity arose that made us reconsider our stance on his involvement. What if we intentionally steered clear of perfectionism with Devon, allowing her to take an unconventional path that might not be entirely suitable for her, and then explored the uncharted territory that unfolded as a result? As the dust settles, Anthony and Kenny are left to ponder their next move in the Valley, their fate hanging precariously in the balance.
Despite its unconventional approach, the show’s success ultimately hinges on carefully crafting character arcs and storylines across the season. The key question is, which characters will resonate with audiences? Who do we wish there? What’s the intriguing narrative thread that binds them together?
