Among the hectic rhythms of everyday life, Legacy Home & Hearth Museum provides a rare opportunity to pause, celebrate our rich heritage, and revel in community, all while proudly embracing and creating our own domestic traditions. Growing up in Fresno, California, after my parents emigrated from Mexico, instilled in me the confidence to proudly celebrate my cultural heritage. As I reminisce about weekend outings to flea markets, the sweet melodies of “El Sonidito” performed by lively bands still linger vividly in my memory, alongside the joyous celebration of a friend’s quinceañera filled with warmth and abundant family gatherings. Despite the transition to Michigan for my academic pursuits, I found myself often the sole Latina presence in the classroom, facing significant culture shock. To facilitate a seamless transition at the University of Michigan, I affiliated with Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. The Latin-American Trendsetters Association (), the premier and largest Latina-based sorority, significantly altered my outlook. Our group’s objectives have been deliberately aligned to foster excellence in academia, empower underprivileged girls, and promote political and cultural awareness through grassroots activism. Through my area of specialization, I have identified the importance of creating diverse options for individuals who often find themselves lacking suitable choices.
As I navigate my era’s openness to confronting past traumas, I strive to break free from inherited survival instincts that have been passed down through generations, instead cultivating fresh, healthy patterns that can be perpetuated by future generations? As I witness others celebrating the diversity within our community, I’m filled with pride knowing that it’s acceptable for everyone to express their cultural heritage without feeling compelled to conform to traditional norms, thereby fostering a culture of inclusivity and understanding. As we move forward, I imagine a harmonious Latino community where neighbors support one another, boldly confronts cultural barriers to mental wellness and healthcare, and is empowered to thrive, unfettered by the constraints of immigration status and financial limitations. This month, let’s revisit the notion that “Calladita te ves mas bonita” – being quiet makes you prettier – and instead tap into our inner “chingona,” channeling confidence to stand tall with “Cabeza en alto” (head held high), moving forward while embracing our past.
For me, Love Hurts Here Most is about yearning to relive moments of love and longing. As we come together, let us also take the opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the rich cultural diversity that surrounds us, encompassing traditions, values, and ways of living that are unique to each community. Having recently relocated to the United States, From Argentina, this celebration seems to embody everything I once yearned for – a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving the roots that define where we’re from. Even when surrounded by unfamiliar surroundings, I remain deeply connected to my heritage and upbringing. This not only fills me with pride, but also solidifies my sense of identity. As I venture into uncharted territories, the rich legacy of my ancestors remains a constant companion by my side. As this month unfolds, I am inspired to pay tribute to my cultural roots while simultaneously exploring and learning from the diverse traditions that surround me.
