Can Data-Driven Insights Restore Sanity to School Athletic Recruitment Processes?

The school athletic recruiting landscape has devolved into a veritable Wild West scenario in recent times. Since the NIL era’s inception and the broad opening of the switch portal, the process of aligning conventions and now reaching the tip of the nationwide letters of intent program has devolved into a chaotic free-for-all, as hundreds of thousands of novice athletes vie for 2,800 faculty sports programs. However, chaotic market indicators suggest a window of opportunity for Austin-based tech entrepreneur Austin, who aims to harness the power of big data and AI to revolutionize the recruitment process for educational institutions.

Brian Cruver freely concedes that he’s simply not wired for enthusiasm about sports. With a background in enterprise technology, he has successfully founded and grown two profitable companies: Xenex, a robotic disinfection firm, and Alert Media, an emergency alert communications company.

I once enjoyed a semi-retired lifestyle. “I used to think I’d achieved a certain level of success,” Cruver says. We acquired Alert Media a couple of years ago, and I just couldn’t help but scratch that itch again. What’s the significant drawback to consider when contemplating repairs? While simultaneously dealing with my child’s soccer recruitment.

As a devoted parent of a high school athlete, Cruver delved deeply into the complex process of college recruitment, driven by the dual goals of securing a top-notch program for his son and guiding him toward a successful collegiate experience. The entrepreneur investigated online platforms touting themselves as showcases for high school athletes, supposedly connecting them with college scouts, but found the approach inefficient and financially burdensome.

Most of the apps we’ve identified target parents directly, with the primary goal of convincing them to provide financial information. It’s virtually predatory,” he says. “As parents, we only figured out what we were supposed to do when it was already too late.”

The recruitment process had a profound impact on both Cruver and Brett Andrew, his colleague at Alert Media, as they witnessed firsthand the intense scrutiny their colleague’s daughter faced in her pursuit of a spot on the faculty volleyball team. Faced with a constant struggle to complete their rosters, coaches find themselves in a relentless quest to recruit new talent. Among the most impressive high-school graduates is a prospect that has been making waves since emerging from the school’s ranks.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA introduced revised guidelines allowing student-athletes to participate immediately upon transferring to a new institution, eliminating the previous one-year sit-out requirement. The integration of NIL policies with existing regulations enables professional athletes to become de facto free agents, permitting them to switch schools annually based on the highest bidder.

The recent developments surrounding the conclusion of the National Letter of Intent program only serve to amplify the uncertainty surrounding the transformation of the traditional, geography-based convention system into a newly conceived framework. Despite its evident shortcomings, the existing recruitment framework still cries out for a thorough overhaul.

According to Cruver, it’s common knowledge that faculty athletics recruitment operates on a significant scale. “It’s absolute chaos. It’s the Wild West. There’s no course of. The athletes hate it. They abhor their situation. The highschool coaches hate it. The faculty coaches hate it. Despite general disdain, everyone still endures it without discernible method or motive.

Cruver and Andrew co-founded Scorability last year, a venture aimed at bringing clarity to the chaotic college recruitment process by harnessing the power of big data, analytics, and AI.

Professional sports teams are under intense pressure to identify and acquire top talent that will drive their success forward. As college athletic programs grow in popularity, coaches for larger sports such as soccer are now embarking on extensive nationwide tours, equipped with an array of phones to connect with prospective student-athletes and their families.

“It’s unrealistic for them to manage primarily a pipeline of recruits, moving seamlessly from supply to dedication to signature – that’s just not feasible,” Cruver asserts. While coaches may excel in their profession, they’re ultimately juggling multiple responsibilities: earning revenue, securing top talent, nurturing public images by interacting with fans – including the occasional infant – and overseeing financial operations. Despite their intentions, coaches often spend insufficient time cultivating athletes and preparing them for competition. What drives them most is a desire to elevate their careers and personal well-being.

To empower coaches’ decision-making, Scorability must become the go-to resource providing accurate, comprehensive data on high school and collegiate student-athletes. The corporation has also developed sophisticated algorithms that identify the most suitable matches between athletes and consumer college programs.

Scorability aims to gather information from every angle possible, according to Cruver, including the web, high school and college programs, camps, coaches, and athletes themselves.

The Scorability framework features a meticulously crafted 16-part mental and character assessment survey, allowing it to go beyond basic statistics and identify several key intangible factors crucial for long-term success, yet challenging to quantify. A Division III faculty soccer team in Arkansas, like any other Scorability user, can now benefit from a significantly more straightforward – and cost-effective – method of identifying the players best suited to their program.

Cruver explains that by approaching varsity coaches directly, they’re showcasing the value of the activity. You may possess an inventory of approximately 900 linebackers. Instead of trying to develop a personal connection with 900 linebackers and their families, or visiting each one individually to assess their intelligence, height, and character, why not utilize Scorability’s advanced capabilities to provide you with 9,000 linebacker profiles, allowing your algorithms to identify the top 90 prospects for you?

The crème de la crème of soccer players in the country often end up at institutions affiliated with the Power Five conferences – ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12, and SEC – which boast top-tier programs that offer the best resources for student-athletes to excel in both academics and athletics. Will college athletes’ ability to profit from their name, image, and likeness ultimately secure their financial futures? What’s the story behind the five different conferences in NCAA Division I men’s soccer? Why does ladies’ soccer draw attention towards its 33 conferences? Scorability aims to establish itself in the competitive market by targeting the extensive trail of athletes and parcels, a prime area of focus.

“For a D3 program in Arkansas to obtain first-hand data on 3,000 athletes would be valued at around $400,000 and require approximately 2,700 hours,” Cruver notes. They often lack the $400,000, and more typically, they haven’t logged 2,700 hours of flying experience either. “And every week, we accomplished it.”

Scorability emerges from stealth mode after refining its platform over the past 12 months. With over $11 million in funding secured, the corporation boasts an impressive network of more than 100,000 registered athletes, along with a select group of paid prospects. To enhance our support for both varsity and individual sports teams next year, we will prioritize adding resources early in the winter semester followed by a focus on individual sports in the subsequent fall season.
