Binder has completely reengineered its latest innovation in moulded M16 connectors. While the initial design borrowed concepts from field-wireable connectors, some of these features haven’t been entirely suitable for the molded model as initially defined.
As its portfolio expands and market demand surges, the corporation has resolved to revamp the product by adopting a modular design, allowing for seamless integration of common components across both shielded and unshielded versions.
According to Sebastian Ader, product supervisor at binder, a defining feature of the innovative connector design is the reduction in parts, resulting in cost savings for customers. Because of the modular design, we require an additional module for both shielded and unshielded versions, with a single, identical component needed for each. This enables us to deliver enhanced services while offering customers cost advantages without sacrificing quality.
Developing the new M16 connector proved particularly challenging, according to Binder, as it had to meet both the M16 standard (DIN EN 61076-2-106) and the rigorous requirements for the eight-pin shielded variant, including IP68 sealing and compatibility among various manufacturers.
The newly developed M16 system, designed to optimize its sealing system, effectively addresses previously experienced compatibility problems that had resulted in inadequate sealing, according to the company. The innovative connector technology is fully compliant with EU’s lead-free regulations, specifically Directive 2015/863/EU, ensuring a safer and more environmentally friendly product.

During the redesign of M16 molded connectors, Binder explicitly factored in considerations related to equipment performance, operational techniques, and stress levels. The innovative triangular design of the M16 connectors ensures effortless manipulation, unaffected by extreme cold or gloved hands, such as in sub-zero temperatures.

The moulded M16 connectors also exceed requirements for shock resistance, vibration tolerance, and tightness, as stated by the manufacturer. “In concrete terms, the robust design guarantees a reliable link in extreme temperatures, harsh environments, and humid conditions, significantly reducing the likelihood of malfunction and ensuring uninterrupted machinery functionality.”
