The Bessie Coleman Girls in Aviation Committee seeks talented and motivated young women to join its ranks.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is seeking innovative leaders from aviation and related industries – including those pioneering drone technology – to spearhead a groundbreaking initiative aimed at shaping the future of women in aviation, fostering diversity and inclusion within the sector. Purposes are currently open for the project. The Bessie Coleman Committee represents a pioneering endeavour inspired by the trailblazing achievements of Bessie Coleman, the first African American and Native American woman to earn a pilot’s licence.

The Bessie Coleman Girls in Aviation Advisory Committee is a program designed to empower young women to pursue careers in aviation by providing mentorship, education, and networking opportunities. The committee aims to increase diversity and inclusion within the aviation industry by fostering a pipeline of talented female professionals. Through regular meetings, workshops, and events, participants gain valuable insights into various aviation fields, develop essential skills, and build connections with experienced mentors and peers.

The Bessie Coleman Girls in Aviation Advisory Committee aimed to devise practical strategies to attract and retain more girls and women in aviation professions. An incident occurred as part of the Girls in Aviation Advisory Board’s (GIAAB) report, which was relaunched in March 2022. 

According to the FAA, its objective is to bring together 25 industry leaders from across the aviation sector. Meet innovative minds in the world of aviation, showcasing exceptional expertise and pioneering spirit.

Committee members will:

  • Pioneering initiatives are imperative to bridge the significant gender gap prevailing in the aviation sector. By fostering a culture of inclusivity and promoting women’s participation, we can unlock new opportunities for female professionals to soar to greater heights. This necessitates addressing systemic barriers, providing tailored support mechanisms, and encouraging mentorship programs that empower women to break through glass ceilings. Moreover, it is essential to celebrate achievements and recognize the invaluable contributions women make in shaping the future of aviation.
  • Develop comprehensive strategies in partnership with various experts, yielding practical recommendations that drive tangible results.
  • Empower a new generation of female aviators to take to the skies and soar to greater heights, building on the legacy of trailblazing women who have paved the way for those who will follow in their footsteps.

The committee will convene at least twice annually to focus on driving meaningful changes that promote substantial diversity within the aviation industry.

The Bessie Coleman Girls in Aviation Advisory Committee, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting aviation and STEM education for young girls, is taking bold steps to bridge the gender gap in the industry.

As of December, a mere 10.3% of all pilots are female, a stark disparity that requires attention and action to address the persistent dearth of women in this predominantly male-dominated field. As of January 31st, 2023, in accordance with information disseminated by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In the drone industry, the pace is decidedly more sluggish. According to recent statistics, a mere 8.4% of distant pilots, commonly referred to as drone pilots, identify as female. That’s a complete of 30,935

Notwithstanding its modest gains, the pace at which female drone pilots have progressed remains largely stagnant compared to previous years. In the past year, women accounted for just 7.9% of the total number of pilots holding a remote pilot’s license.
