Three Australian companies have inked deals worth a total of $6.6 million in the latest phase of the Sovereign Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) project, overseen by the Superior Strategic Capabilities Accelerator (ASCA).
The three companies – AMSL Aero, Boresight, and Grabba Applied Sciences – were selected after a competitive “fly-off” demonstration of their capabilities in April. Each company has executed a $2.2 million agreement to complete the development of their prototypes to manufacturing readiness and produce 100 standardized unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for shared purposes.
A sovereign drone production capability will mitigate safety and supply chain risks associated with certain industrial drones, enabling Defence and other government agencies to reap the benefits of economies of scale by procuring larger quantities at lower costs currently available.
Companies primarily operating in New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory, and Queensland will leverage these funds to enhance their manufacturing capacity, advance their prototypes to an industry standard by year-end, and subsequently manufacture their initial 100 unmanned aerial systems (UAS).
The Sovereign Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Problem was the flagship endeavour undertaken by ASCA, serving as a catalyst to unlock its capacity to rapidly deploy an innovative and adaptive process in support of the Australian Defence Force’s technological advancement needs.
“As part of its collaborative efforts, ASCA successfully partnered with businesses to rapidly develop a critical capability, demonstrating the power of unity in achieving tangible results and establishing a strong foundation for future growth.”
“In addition to demonstrating a focus on functionality, as Defence and other authorities companies have done, this issue can also centre on how ASCA can leverage innovative approaches to accelerate growth initiatives with minimal overhead costs, enabling seamless participation from SMEs.”
