U.S. Maxar Technologies, a leading satellite television and area expertise company, has confirmed a data breach affecting the personal information of its employees, according to a filing with state regulators, which disclosed the incident.

Headquartered in Colorado, Maxar operates a fleet of imaging satellites and manufactures spacecraft, boasting one of the largest business satellite constellations in orbit. In a mandatory filing with California’s attorney general just last week, Maxar disclosed that a hacker using an IP address based in Hong Kong breached its network on October 4 to gain access to data containing employees’ personal information. It is unclear whether the alleged hacker is actually located in Hong Kong or simply used a server there to conceal their true location.

Maxar disclosed that it detected the breach approximately every week from late October 11, prompting swift action to prevent further unauthorized access to the compromised system. Although our inquiry revealed that the unauthorized individual likely gained access to the system’s data for approximately a week prior to the corrective action being implemented, according to Maxar in their disclosure statement. 

According to Maxar, the breached information comprises sensitive details including employees’ names, genders, physical addresses, Social Security numbers, company contact information, employment status, worker ID numbers, and job descriptions.

Maxar’s workforce totals 2,600 employees, with over half—approximately 1,300—holding U.S. citizenship. safety clearances. These contractors are required to perform categorized work for the US government. Local authorities, comparable in scope to nationwide safety initiatives.

Despite the significant data breach, Maxar has yet to disclose the exact number of employees affected.

A Maxar spokesperson, Kristin Carringer, has not yet responded to our inquiries from TechCrunch.
