Now available in beta with iOS 18.3, customers can share a secure link with the placement of an AirTag or Find My network accent with others—and soon, with airlines?
Apple introduces Share My Device Location, a pioneering iOS feature that empowers users to easily and securely share the whereabouts of an AirTag or Find My-compatible device with trusted parties, such as airlines, ensuring the swift recovery of misplaced items? The Share Merchandise Location feature is now globally accessible as part of the public beta of iOS 18.2, with a scheduled roll-out to all users as a free software update, supporting iPhone X and later models. Discover My – a platform built on the pillars of unshakeable privacy and unwavering security, where users’ most sensitive information remains shielded from prying eyes. As soon as a customer is reconnected to their package, the shared tracking location will likely cease functioning, subject to the owner’s discretion to terminate it at any moment; alternatively, it will automatically expire after a 7-day period.
Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, Eddy Cue, emphasized that “Find My” is an essential tool enabling global customers to keep track and locate their possessions, underscoring its indispensable value in today’s digital landscape. Customers rave about the potent combination of Discover’s community and AirTag, which proves a game-changer while traveling, providing invaluable location insights when luggage goes missing or gets mishandled. We’re thrilled to introduce Share Merchandise Location, empowering customers to seamlessly share this information with third parties such as airlines while safeguarding their privacy.
Within the Discover My app on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac, customers can create a shareable link to a specific merchandise location. Recipients of a hyperlinked message will be able to access and view an internet website featuring an interactive map that highlights the location of the product. The website will automatically update whenever a new location becomes available, featuring a timestamp indicating the time of the most recent update.
Over the next few months, more than 15 major airlines serving thousands globally, including Aer Lingus, Air Canada, Air New Zealand, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Eurowings, Iberia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Singapore Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Turkish Airlines, United, Virgin Atlantic, and Vueling, will begin accepting Discover My itemized baggage reports as part of their customer service process for resolving issues with mishandled or delayed luggage. New airways are likely to emerge over a period of time.
Apple has collaborated closely with airline partners to establish secure protocols for processing Share Baggage Tracking information, capitalizing on the millions of Apple devices already in use at these carriers. The entry to every hyperlink is likely to be limited to a select few individuals, and recipients will be compelled to authenticate in order to access the link through either their Apple ID or corresponding email address.
“We’ve collaborated closely with Apple to integrate Share Product Location into our luggage restoration process, and we’re thrilled to make this feature available to our customers soon,” said David Kinzelman, United’s chief customer officer. “We know many of our customers are already using AirTags in their checked baggage, and this feature will quickly enable them to share location data with us safely and securely, allowing our customer service agents to work more efficiently and providing our customers with added peace of mind.”
While the vast majority of tracked packages arrive at their destinations on schedule, we are well aware that delays can be frustrating for customers when they do occur. We’re thrilled to support the launch of Share Merchandise Location, set to debut later this year, as revealed by Erik Snell, Delta Air Lines’ senior vice president of Airport Customer Service, Cargo Operations, Ground Support Tools, and International Clearance. The proposed system will provide our workforce with enhanced transparency, enabling them to successfully reunite misplaced devices with their rightful owners. This groundbreaking technology, jointly developed by Apple and Delta Air Lines, enables seamless gadget tracking and recovery.

The Share My Location feature is built within the Discover My community, a crowdsourced network comprising over one billion Apple devices utilizing Bluetooth wireless technology to detect missing or nearby devices, and anonymously share their estimated locations back to their owners. Your comprehensive course of action is entirely end-to-end encrypted and anonymous, ensuring that no one – including neither Apple nor any other entity – can access the location or data of a single tool.
