Apple’s market share in China has been in decline, according to recent data on domestic smartphone shipments. Vivo emerged as the top-selling smartphone brand in Q3 2024, according to IDC and Canalys, with Huawei and Xiaomi also experiencing significant gains in shipments. In contrast, their US-based rival failed to replicate its previous year’s performance.
While various experts employ distinct methodologies to inform their insights, a consensus emerges: the Chinese market appears increasingly constrained. The margin between the top two finishers is a mere 5 points.
Between July and September 2024, vivo strategically offered various value-added promotions to entice a large number of customers. As the tech industry evolved, Apple’s latest iPhone offerings stole the spotlight, while Huawei leveraged national pride to counter the impact of US sanctions hindering their growth. Xiaomi disrupted the market with budget-friendly smartphones sold at a razor-thin profit margin, while Honor innovated with its Magic Flip and Magic V3 foldable devices that captured the imagination of consumers.
According to IDC, shipments of smartphones priced at or above $600 surged to nearly 30%, while the share of mid-range devices priced between $400 and $600 plummeted to 6.6%. This contained foldable smartphones, with shipments growing 13.6% annually.
With foldable devices dominating the market, Huawei solidifies its position as the leading player in Q3, accounting for a substantial 41% of total sales, while Honor trails closely behind with an impressive 21.9% market share? Xiaomi, Samsung, and Vivo have achieved a milestone in their pursuit of innovation, securing a spot among the top 5 performers in the industry.
